SEOUL — South Korean defense contractor LIG Nex1 is moving to rename itself “LIG Defense & Aerospace,” a rebranding effort aimed at explicitly signaling its expansion into satellite manufacturing and space systems as the company approaches its 50th anniversary in 2026.
According to a Dec. 29 report by Chosun Biz, the company has already filed trademark registrations for the new English name and secured the internet domain ligdna.com as of September. The proposed change reflects a strategic pivot from its traditional stronghold in guided missiles and avionics toward a broader portfolio that includes orbital infrastructure and satellite integration.
An LIG Nex1 official, speaking to local media, confirmed the deliberations, stating, “We are reviewing a name change and considering various options, though nothing has been finalized.”
From Missiles to Constellations
The potential retirement of the “Nex1” brand, adopted in 2007 after the company split from LG Group, marks a shift in corporate identity designed to align with the South Korean government’s push for a domestic “NewSpace” economy.
While LIG Nex1 is best known for its Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile system, the company has aggressively targeted the space sector over the past 24 months. In April, the company secured a contract for the Cheollian 5 (Geo-Kompsat-3) program, a geostationary weather and water monitoring satellite, tasked with developing the satellite’s system, bus, and payload.
To support this backlog, the company completed a new KRW 63.1 billion ($44.5 million) satellite and laser integration facility in Daejeon in October. The site is equipped to handle the assembly and testing of high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, a critical technology for the company’s military surveillance offerings.
Regulatory and Shareholder Hurdles
The rebranding process requires multiple layers of approval before becoming official. Under South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Act, the company must receive authorization from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) to modify its designation as a defense contractor.
Following regulatory clearance, the name change would be put to a vote at the company’s general shareholder meeting, likely scheduled for March 2026.
