- Increased interest in the HD market has prompted infrastructure investment by Arqiva and their Satellite Media Solutions division. They have already initiated the building of a new HD-ready TV playout suite for HD and SD channels. The new suite should be ready for “action” starting in April of this year. Arqiva currently plays out more than 60 channels and this new suite will increase that capacity to include as many as eight HD channels. The key differentiator between HD and SD is the bandwidth size required to carry each signal: 1.5 GB for an HD channel, as compared to 260 MB for an SD channel. HD’s equally high requirement for satellite bandwidth has contributed to the limited number of HD services available. However, Arqiva’s position as one of the largest indie purchasers of satellite capacity has made it easier for their customers to obtain and secure the necessary satellite space for distribution in the U.S. and Europe. The new playout suite will accommodate HD bandwidth requirements as well as the addition of HD-level graphics and the incorporation of Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Also brought into play will be the Arqiva designed and built WorkFlow tool to deliver a wider range of apps and better efficiencies across the broadcast process—Hampshire, United Kingdom
