On August 27, 2026, Spanish launch provider PLD Space was selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the European Launcher Challenge (ELC) initiative, securing a contract valued at €158.9 million.

The award funds the commercial consolidation of the MIURA 5 orbital launch vehicle and accelerates development of upgraded payload performance and propulsive landing technologies.
Program Context and ELC Framework
The ELC contract covers Components A and B of ESA’s sovereign space access strategy. Component A supports commercial flight scaling and infrastructure consolidation for MIURA 5, establishing an operational flight cadence targeting commercial and institutional small satellite missions through 2030.
The contract builds on PLD Space’s suborbital test flight of MIURA 1 in October 2023 and follows the company’s 2024 unveiling of its long-term MIURA Next and LINCE crewed capsule roadmap.
Upgraded Orbital Capacity and Hardware Specifications
Under Component B (Upgraded Orbital Capacity), PLD Space will integrate performance enhancements into the MIURA 5 two-stage launcher. These upgrades focus on expanding payload mass-to-orbit capability, extending upper-stage orbital reach, and introducing active propulsive recovery systems for stage reusability.
Engineered subsystems developed under Component B—including high-thrust liquid engine avionics, re-entry thermal protection, and guidance algorithms—are designed for direct technical transfer to PLD Space’s future heavy-lift vehicles.
Executive Leadership Viewpoint
“ESA’s selection of PLD Space confirms the maturity of the roadmap we have been building for years: a European launch capability designed to grow with a bold footprint, with technology, industry and execution under our own control,” said Ezequiel Sánchez, Executive President of PLD Space. “For PLD Space, this contract is not an isolated milestone. It is part of a disciplined execution path: from demonstrating our technology with MIURA 1, to proving orbital capability with MIURA 5, developing its upgraded orbital capacity to scale performance and advance reusability, and ultimately transferring those critical technologies to MIURA Next.”
Industrial Roadmap and Heavy Launch Outlook
PLD Space operates more than 188,000 square meters of manufacturing, testing, and operational infrastructure across Elche, Teruel (Spain), Kourou (French Guiana), and Duqm (Oman). Technology transfers validated through the MIURA 5 upgrade program will serve as baseline engineering blocks for MIURA Next, the company’s planned heavy launcher family designed to support sovereign European payloads, constellations, and crewed missions.
