SAN DIEGO — SpaceX has selected Qualcomm Technologies to provide terrestrial base stations for its planned nationwide Starlink Mobile network, Via Satellite reported on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026.

The multi-year infrastructure agreement establishes a primary hardware vendor for the terrestrial ground segment of SpaceX’s hybrid satellite-cellular network, which aims to combine low Earth orbit (LEO) direct-to-cell connectivity with high-density ground coverage.
Terrestrial Footprint and EchoStar Spectrum Convergence
The ground equipment deal solidifies the terrestrial layer of SpaceX’s mobile carrier roadmap following a succession of strategic spectrum and infrastructure moves. The agreement follows SpaceX’s landmark acquisition of AWS-4 and H-block spectrum from EchoStar and preliminary discussions regarding an acquisition of EchoStar’s Boost Mobile subsidiary.
While direct-to-cell satellites provide coverage across rural and unserved areas, terrestrial small cells and macro base stations are essential to deliver high-capacity throughput in densely populated urban and suburban zones where orbital beams face capacity saturation.
Dragonwing Cellular Architecture and Massive MIMO Specifications
Under the supply agreement, Starlink Mobile’s terrestrial cell sites will deploy Qualcomm’s Dragonwing Cellular Infrastructure platforms:
- Radio Units: Utilizes the Dragonwing QRU100 platform featuring Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) in a 64T64R configuration with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths, optimized for transmission in the 2 GHz frequency band.
- Baseband Processing: Deploys the Dragonwing QDU100 platform to process latency-sensitive physical layer baseband signals.
The integrated chipsets improve performance-per-watt metrics across high-traffic towers, supporting 5G operations while creating an architectural foundation for artificial intelligence-native (AI-native) 6G protocols.
Deployment Timeline and Commercial Roadmap
Plans call for terrestrial network rollouts to commence in 2027, with tens of thousands of base stations slated for installation across the United States over a multi-year deployment cycle. Speaking during Qualcomm’s quarterly earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon noted that revenue recognition from the project is scheduled to begin late in fiscal 2027, with significant financial contribution projected for fiscal 2028 as physical tower sites become active.
