The Associated Press is reporting a new military satellite courtesy of the Russian Space Forces is now in orbit, after a successful launch on December 9th aboard a Proton-M rocket. The Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan was the scene of the launch. This is the Kosmos-2434 satellite. In a statement brodcast over Rossiya state television by General Vladimir Popvkin, the Chief of Russia’s Space Forces, he indicated the new satellite would provide military communications services. Two-thirds of Russia’s approximately 100 in orbit satellites have a military aspect to them. And with the continued influx of oil revenues continuing to increase, the modernization of Russia’s satellite fleet is expected to continue. This Globus satcom was built by NPO PM and is the first such Globus sat not to use the Raduga cover name. The ITAR-TASS News Agency indicates the launch occurred at 3:16 a.m., Moscow time, on Sunday, reaching designated orbit at 12:17 p.m., Moscow time.
