On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Japanese aerospace manufacturer IHI Corporation (IHI) and Finnish space technology firm Kuva Space announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance hyperspectral satellite data services across Japan and East Asia.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two organizations will assess Kuva Space’s current fleet capacity, establish parameters for a sovereign Japanese hyperspectral constellation, and explore joint manufacturing models to support localized satellite assembly in Japan.
Strategic Context and Multi-Sensor Integration
The MoU builds on an operational demonstration phase underway since November 2025, during which IHI evaluated data products from Kuva Space’s initial Hyperfield-1 satellite platform. IHI intends to integrate high-resolution hyperspectral capabilities into the sovereign Earth observation framework it is developing for Japan, complementing existing optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), infrared, radio frequency (RF), and VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) instruments. The combined platform will support vessel identification, land-use mapping, and anomaly detection across maritime and defense sectors.
Constellation Architecture and Performance Metrics
The proposed operational framework targets continuous regional monitoring across East Asia:
- Regional Operational Requirement: Designed to maintain daily hyperspectral coverage across approximately 20 million square kilometers encompassing Japan, neighboring territories, and strategic sea lanes.
- Phase-1 Scale: A initial block of approximately 20 second-generation Hyperfield-2 satellites is projected to fulfill baseline daily coverage targets.
- Global Constellation Target: Kuva Space plans to scale its broader network to approximately 100 satellites by the end of 2030 to achieve subdaily revisit rates.
- Spectral Expansion: Second-generation Hyperfield-2 spacecraft will incorporate short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensors to enable automated material identification, camouflage detection, and target tracking.
- Capacity-Sharing Framework: IHI will utilize a capacity-sharing model, securing guaranteed tasking rights in proportion to procured hardware while leveraging the revisit cadence of the broader constellation.
Sovereign Security Priorities

Production and Deployment Timeline
Joint evaluation operations between IHI and Kuva Space will continue throughout 2026. Primary procurement decisions will be aligned with the initial launch manifest of the upgraded Hyperfield-2 series, scheduled to commence orbital deployments in 2027.
