  • In 2014, the volume of mobile data sent and received every month by users around the world will exceed by a significant amount the total data traffic for all of 2008, according to a new study from ABI Research. “When people think of mobile data they think of BlackBerry and iPhone handsets,” says senior analyst Jeff Orr. “But the bulk of today’s traffic is generated by laptops with PC Card and USB modems.” While add-on cellular modems represented two-thirds of traffic in 2008, computers with embedded 3G/4G modems will lead in 2014 with more than 50% of the world’s mobile data traffic. ABI Research’s “Mobile Data Traffic Analysis” describes the growth of traffic transferred over mobile data networks – information that is closely guarded by most operators. It defines the market and technology issues, with particular emphasis on subscribers, devices and wireless protocols. In addition, it details the salient market trends and forecasts both regional and global traffic levels through 2014.

  • According to the numbers that have been published by Bernstein Research, the Apple iPhone accounts for 8 percent of all mobile phone revenue and 32 percent of the industry’s handset profits. THis is for all mobile phones that have been sold during the first half of this year, with Apple earning $5 billion. This ensured Apple became the 5th largest revenue player, right behind Nokia, Samsung, RIM, and LG, and they garnered $2 billion in operating profits, the leader in that category. In second place, RIM earned close to 20 percent, while the other three chimed in with 10 percent margins. Losing money in the handset market were Sony Ericsson and Motorola, losing $841 and $762 million, respectively. Apple’s 8 percent industry revenue share equates to 25 percent of the profits earned from world phone sales.

  • Argentina has reportedly ended the first half of 2009 with 49.2 million mobile lines in service, up 14 percent year-on-year. In June, the mobile telephony traffic totaled 3.82 billion calls, representing a 30 percent increase compared to the same period a year ago. Public phones totaled 146,988, an increase of 10.7 percent in comparison to the same period a year ago, according to Wireless Federation.

  • According to TeleGeography, 3G subscriber use is going to radically change over the next five years. By 2011, the U.S. will overtake Japan as far as 3G subscribers are concerned. However, three years later, China will become the 3G leader and India will have more 3G subscribers than Japan to occupy the number three worldwide use slot. Looking at the regions, by the close of 2013, Asian 3G subscribers will be 2x those of Western Europe and 4x those in North America.

  • PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) and PT Indosat are set to battle it out for the Indonesian mobileTV market. The Jakarta Globe reports that the new broadcast service made its debut on Tuesday and is available in parts of the nation’s capital city on a trial basis. Two interim mobile DTV licenses were issued by the country’s Communication and Information Technology Ministry, one for Tren Mobile TV and one for Telkom, who has spent USD1 million to move mobileTV to the trial stage . Also part of the trial will be PT Telkomsel and payTV operator Telkomvision, the latter offering eight channels that include National Geographic and CNN.
