The International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory announced the launch of the 2026 Orbital Edge Accelerator, marking the program’s second year of connecting early-stage startups with in-orbit validation and private capital.

The initiative aims to integrate low Earth orbit (LEO) into the standard research and development pipeline for industries ranging from biotechnology to advanced manufacturing.
Strategic Investment and Program Structure
The 2026 cohort introduces two distinct participation tracks designed to categorize innovation based on market application. The Sentinel Track focuses on space-specific technologies and dual-use applications for defense and security, while the Disrupt Track is dedicated to in-space manufacturing and space-based biological opportunities.
Selected participants will receive between $500,000 and $750,000 in private capital funding from a consortium of investment partners, including Stellar Ventures, E2MC, Cook Inlet Region, Inc. (CIRI), Context Ventures, Draper Associates, and Draper University. Additionally, startups are eligible to compete for the Boeing-sponsored Technology in Space Prize, which provides up to $100,000 in non-dilutive grant funding.
Technical Access and Mentorship
The program provides a bridge between terrestrial laboratory results and orbital execution by offering direct use of the ISS National Lab for R&D validation. Beyond flight opportunities, the accelerator incorporates mentorship from corporate partners such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), BAE Systems, and J.P. Morgan. This mentorship focuses on scaling space-enabled technologies toward commercialization, addressing the traditionally long and costly R&D timelines associated with deep-tech sectors.
Ray Lugo, Chief Executive Officer of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), which manages the ISS National Lab, noted that the program is designed to provide startups with the necessary capital and orbital access to move beyond theoretical research into functional product validation.
Upcoming Event Schedule
The ISS National Lab has scheduled several engagement opportunities for founders and investors to learn about the 2026 program requirements and commercialization goals:
- Networking Reception: Cambridge, MA – April 23, 2026
- Informational Webinar: Online – May 5, 2026
- Networking Reception: San Mateo/Palo Alto, CA – May 7, 2026
Interested startups can apply via the official Orbital Edge Accelerator website, with recruitment focusing on sectors where microgravity accelerates iteration, such as therapeutics, robotics, and advanced materials.
