@ 2012 NAB… (Event, SatBroadcasting™, SATCOM)

February 21, 2012

[SatNews] A true flood of information regarding the upcoming 2012 NAB in Las Vegas is arriving each day at our editorial offices… here are some of the latest announcements…

Fast Forward Video

Superior picture quality is the hallmark of Fast Forward Video‘s award-winning line of digital video recording (DVR) systems, and this year’s NAB attendees will understand why. Attendees will have their first look at the new sideKick HD™, a multiformat, straight-to-edit camera-mountable DVR that raises the bar for image quality when paired with today’s state-of-the-art camcorders. At the 2012 NAB Show, the sideKick HD will be the headliner for FFV’s full line of durable, user-friendly DVR solutions, each designed with customer requirements in mind and focused on delivering the highest-quality output possible.

    sideKick HD™
Making its international debut at the 2012 NAB Show, FFV’s new sideKick HD™ offers unmatched image quality in a camera-mountable recording solution. Designed to ease production workflows and satisfy the demands of both producers and postproduction editors, the sideKick HD enables customers to get the most out of their camcorders without having to compromise on quality. While the on-board recorders of most camcorders typically deliver a data stream of only 30 megabits per second, the sideKick HD is able to record at 220 megabits per second — providing significantly higher image quality for the “camera original.” As a true straight-to-edit DVR, the sideKick HD records to off-the-shelf, removable 2.5-inch SSD drives in native ProRes (for Apple® Final Cut Pro®) or DNxHD (Avid®) NLE formats. Bringing files into the NLE environment is a simple matter of moving the disk from the SideKick to the computer; no time-consuming ingest or transcoding operations are required.

sideKick HD™ Studio—FFV’s sideKick HD™ Studio is a new, rackmountable version of FFV’s powerful sideKick camera-mounted DVR for use in base stations and studio locations. Occupying only a half RU in width and 2RU in height, sideKick HD Studio is directly compatible with the camera-mounted sideKick HD, giving users the ability to transfer field footage stored on the unit’s 2.5-inch SSD directly into the sideKick HD Studio for easy integration with NLE systems and other content sources for fast and seamless editing and playback to air. With industry-standard RS422 control, operators can connect the sideKick HD Studio with a standard machine controller to enable extended functionality such as cueing, slow-motion play speed control, and reverse play. The unit includes standard analog and AES I/O as well as a gigabit Ethernet port for easy uploading and downloading of content.

Jampro Antennas

Jampro Antennas, Inc. will show a full complement of best-selling economical and flexible television and radio solutions designed and engineered to address every application in the broadcast industry including DTV, DVB-T, FM and HD Radio solutions. Highlights include:

Pictured: Top—Jampro JAT-U UHF Super Turnstile Antenna; Middle—Jampro RCEC Mask Filer; Bottom—Jampro RCCC-102-FM Constant Impedance Combiner.

Jampro JAT-U UHF Super Turnstile Antenna—The radome-enclosed JAT-U UHF Broadband, Band IV/V 470 – 860 MHz antenna can be either top or side mounted on a tower offering a long life of continuous service. Ideal for broadband multi-channel UHF applications, the unit features minimum windloading while providing broadband response. The JAT-U is the perfect answer for applications where either one channel is defined, or multiple channels are combined.

Jampro JUHD Broadband UHF Panel Antenna—The radome-enclosed JUHD Broadband UHF panel antenna is designed as either side-mount or top-mount, and based on a modular design. It can be configured to provide various azimuth and elevation patterns and offers optional beam tilt and null fill to allow maximum coverage. Horizontally polarized, configurations include varying levels of vertical polarization, with results ranging from small amounts of elliptical polarization.

Prostar JA/MS-BB Broadband UHF Slot Antenna—Jampro’s JA/MS-BB Broadband UHF Slot antenna, a part of the legendary Prostar™ line, is an economical alternative to buying, installing and maintaining multiple antennas, it provides a single, compact solution that conserves tower space and minimizes wind loading. Especially designed for multi-channel/combined channel operations in analog-analog, analog-digital or digital-digital TV applications, the JA/MS-BB arrives factory tuned with a ready-to-install, elegant and streamlined design.

RCEC Mask Filter—Jampro’s new 8” RCEC Mask Filter is designed to provide superior mask filter performance at an affordable price and an output power of 5kw. Cross coupling creates steep rejection skirts and the high-Q cavities provide low pass band insertion loss in a compact design.

RCCC-102-FM Constant Impedance FM Bandpass Combiner—Jampro’s RCCC-FM Constant Impedance Combiner features a compact modular design that can be configured to fit into the smallest transmitter rooms and allows an additional frequency to be easily added. These combiners use temperature compensated Bandpass Filters with integrated heat sink tops to keep filters cool and locked on their frequencies. Various models are available for different channel spacing.

Mosart
To be shown at 2012 NAB are…

Mosart® Newscast Automation 3.0, which includes a range of new features and functions, including a redesigned graphical interface with full user configurability, that further enhance the most versatile and powerful studio automation system on the market. Story elements such as cameras, clips, and graphics can easily be assigned to buttons for simple and quick access. A range of interface overviews also can be assigned to buttons, making the GUI a shot box for touch screens and adaptable for a range of TV productions. Story scripts from the newsroom computer system are shown directly in the Mosart GUI, and Mosart operators can store clips and graphical elements in a pool ready for execution on request.

    Mosart homepage link
New for 2012, Mosart 3.0 now also includes interfaces with Harris Nexio and Grass Valley K2 video servers, Calrec and Stagetec audio mixers, Casper, Xpression and Pixelpower graphics, Brainstorm Virtual Studio and Camerobot systems. The Mosart industry-leading open-systems compatibility is extended with new support for Annova‘s OpenMedia and Octopus in addition to ENPS, iNEWS, Dalet News, and NorCom. Mosart now supports eight manufacturers of audio mixers, five manufacturers of vision mixers, nine brands of video servers, nine graphics systems, and six camera robotics systems—as well as simultaneous usage of gear from multiple camera robotic vendors.
This year Mosart launched a Virtual Audio Fader Panel which gives the director and production staff more control and a better overview of audio faders and levels, both those on air and those coming up next.
Content repurposing/reuse and MAM integration are enhanced with the Mosart delivery of news as-run information to continuity control systems such as Snell‘s Morpheus. Through the news as-run integration, continuity and MAM systems are now able to reuse individual stories or events from earlier recorded Mosart productions. Mosart can also be user-configured to query MAM systems for metadata information.
Mosart also features enhanced handling of macros, sequences, loops, and continue points. The Mosart sequences tool enables separate parallel rundowns that can be executed on a studio back wall. Macros and continue points simplify automation setup, allowing the director to program once and then proceed through multiple events or effects. Looping can now be applied to rundowns, segments, sequences, and clips.

Mosart Multi-Studio Solutions—This is a fully featured Mosart newscast automation system designed for the multi-studio broadcaster, providing highly efficient, streamlined sharing of resources and coordination across several control rooms. Scarce resources such as video server ports and graphics engines can be shared for optimal use of infrastructure, and workflow for journalists and production staff is optimized through template sharing and an automated template database, making it possible to create templates that can be re-used in multiple control rooms. Mosart’s system also integrates with studio management systems to provide the ultimate in efficiency and economy.
