SatBroadcasting™ — This report includes new information from Global Technology Transfer Group, ITU, Telairity + Waterman Broadcasting, TelVue

October 17, 2011

[SatNews] For those involved in the SatBroadcasting™ environment, here is important market segment news that could well be of interest to you…

  • Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group) has announced the availability of a patent related to the digital video production and distribution market. The Digital Video Compression patent describes a method for automatically adjusting reference frame intervals. The technology is used during compression of digital video and the patent could be used in any product that is capable of producing a digital video. Some examples include video editing software, devices that record video (e.g., cell phones, tablets, computers with cameras, etc.), and websites that convert video from one format to another. Converting video from one format to another may be found in video-sharing websites that take user-generated content and convert it to the site’s preferred video format. The patent has a particularly strong priority date. The priority date falls between the first versions of popular video formats, such as MPEG-1, which do not allow for automatic frame interval spacing, and the later sophisticated formats that do allow for its use. GTT Group has prepared evidence of use material to illustrate how the patent has been adopted in the video production and distribution industry. The evidence of use materials will be made available to interested parties under non-disclosure and non-notice provisions. GTT Group will be approaching potential buyers and providing materials explaining the strategic advantages of acquiring the portfolio. In addition, GTT Group’s experts will be available to discuss the strengths of the patents and evidence of use in the market.

  • Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) took an important step towards becoming reality when experts reached agreement on most of the pertinent technical characteristics of this exciting new standard for television. UHDTV marks a leap forward beyond the current standards for High Definition Television (HDTV). The experts, which include scientists and engineers from around the world, have been working together for several years in the ITU Study Group on Broadcasting Service (ITU-R Study Group 6) to jointly develop and agree on the technical specifications that will successfully create ‘UHDTV’. A demonstration of UHDTV was provided by the Japanese public service broadcaster NHK at ITU earlier this month. The screen displayed a staggering 33 Million pixels, compared to a maximum two million pixels for the highest quality HDTV screens on offer today. In September 2011, a trial UHDTV link was arranged between London and Amsterdam and plans are under way to cover part of the 2012 London Olympic Games in UHDTV for screening at public venues around the world. ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré, looking ahead to the day UHDTV will become a reality, said, “UHDTV will create an immersive experience for viewers and will generate a host of new business and marketing opportunities.”

  • Waterman Broadcasting of Florida has equipped its fleet of ENG and satellite vehicle with Telairity’s industry-leading H.264/AVC HD/SD encoders. Waterman Broadcasting operates two TV stations on Florida’s west coast, WBBH-TV, “NBC 2” in Ft. Myers, and WZVN-TV, “ABC 7,” licensed to Naples. To service joint news operations at these stations, the company purchased six BE8500 dual-mode auto-switching encoders and four BE-IRD-5502 satellite receiver/decoders. A third Waterman station, WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, Va., is currently evaluating the purchase of additional BE8500 and BE-IRD-5502 units. The Waterman stations join other stations around the country, representing a wide variety of ownership groups, that have previously selected Telairity encoders for DENG (digital electronic news gathering). Telairity’s BE8500 versatile video encoder can autosense either HD or SD video formats, and will automatically select a corresponding encoding mode. It combines leading-edge compression technology (either H.264/AVC or AVS) with settable encode latencies ranging from 150ms to 2 seconds. The BE-IRD-5502 is a versatile broadcast-class H.264/AVC (MPEG-4) HD/SD integrated receiver and decoder for broadcasters, cable operators, and telecoms.

  • TelVue Corporation (OTCQB: TEVE) has introduced its B1000 HyperCaster™ IP Broadcast Server which provides cable operators a hassle-free, low-cost way to launch high quality, professional grade, 24×7 digital television channels within minutes of un-packing. Hardware savings of as much as 75 percent can be achieved through the elimination of real-time encoders and legacy baseband play-out systems. The B1000 HyperCaster provides IP origination for up to 20 independent digital broadcast channels supporting local origination (LO), leased access (LA), PEG channels and longform advertising. When the B1000 HyperCaster is used in conjunction with the TelVue Connect™ cloud-based Broadcast Content Management System, cable operators can achieve dramatic workflow improvement and labor cost reductions of 60 to 80 percent in typical LO/LA operations. The B1000 HyperCaster supports CableLabs® MPEG-2 Transport with both MPEG-2 and H.264 encoded video files in SD and HD formats, including ATSC. The HyperCaster’s native IP over Gigabit Ethernet interface easily integrates with copper or fiber IP network architectures. The B1000 is a compact 1 RU server with dual power supplies and a high reliability solid state hard drive for the operating system and high capacity SATA2 RAID for content storage.
