According to Tong Qingxi, the head of Peking University‘s Institute of Digital China, the CBERS-2B Sino-Brazilian satellite should soon be operational and sending pictures back to ground control. This satellite required $34 million from China and $15 million from Brazil to create. According to an article in the CHINAdaily, bylined by Xin Dingding, the satellite will provide 2.3m resolution pictures of Earth objects. The two Sino-Brazilian resources monitoring sats were launched in 1999 and 2003. CBERS-1 provided information in June and July of this year when the Huaihe River Valley flooded. The data from the sat allowed the government to draft flood-fighting measures. Plus, the CBERS sats and Beijing-1 brought data to the government regarding a glue-green algae outbreak on Taihu Lake. Both China and Brazil plan to launch two more sats under the China-Brazil Earth Resources program, with the next one set for a 2009 launch.
