From The Hindu online news update service comes a story datelined in Beijing indicating the Chang’e-1, China’s lunar probe, will undergo no further orbital corrections. In fact, last Friday’s orbital correction has established the satellite in an accurate approach to the moon. The Xinhua news agency reports this information was stated by Tang Geshi, who is a scientist with the Beijing Aerospace Control Center. The satellite is expected to enter moon orbit today (Monday, November 5th).
You may recall a Long March 3A rocket launched the 2,300 kg lunar orbiter from Xichang Satellite Launch Center on October 24th. This is but the first step of an ambitious Chinese plan for a three-phased moon exploration program. The first pictures of the moon from Chang’e-1 are expected later this month. Once those images are relayed to the control center, the satellite will continue on its moon exploration for one year.
