Posted at the TeleGeography online site is a story reporting another player is joining the worldwide comsat throng… this time, it’s Angola. The country has ordered its own comsat with Russian firms building the satellite. The Russian aerospace agency and Rosoboronexport (the state company that handles Russian arms exports) will cooperate on building the satellite as well as an earth station. Plus, local technicians will also be trained, all to be accomplished by 2011.
Additionally, Intelsat has a new customer agreement with Angolan cellco MSTelcom (a subsidiary of Sonangol Holdings). The agreement calls for GSM coverage to be extended. MSTelcom will use the Intelsat satellite capacity to provide transmission services for their GSM ops as part of their efforts to rebuild telcom infrastructures damaged by civil war.
