KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian tactical radio manufacturer HIMERA and Danish small-satellite developer GomSpace have initiated in-orbit operations of OBRIA NANO, a technology demonstration spacecraft engineered to validate the core architecture for an independent Ukrainian satellite communications network.

The spacecraft launched on Oct. 1, 2026, aboard the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission and has successfully completed initial health checks under sovereign Ukrainian operational control.
Sovereign Architecture and Frontline Communications Resilience
The orbital commissioning follows intensified efforts across Kyiv to diversify strategic data links and mitigate exposure to external network interventions. Demand for sovereign communications assets accelerated following mid-October policy shifts, when the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed operational velocity restrictions on Starshield transceivers deployed with frontline units.
To address operational continuity, Ukrainian defense officials are pursuing complementary space programs with European partners. On Oct. 22, 2026, during an official state visit by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to Kyiv, Finnish SAR operator ICEYE and Nokia signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence. The pact expands upon the ICEYE and Nokia defense satcom partnership, which provides sovereign control over low Earth orbit (LEO) small satellites, ground networks, and hardened user terminals.
In-Orbit Platform and Operational Technical Checkouts
Under the GomSpace-HIMERA collaborative initiative, OBRIA NANO functions as the dedicated orbital testbed for regional coverage capabilities. The spacecraft utilizes GomSpace nanosatellite bus hardware integrated with dedicated communications payloads capable of interfacing with HIMERA’s tactical radio equipment. Ukrainian flight controllers are managing orbital commanding, RF signal validation, and cross-band link evaluations during active ground-station passes across Ukrainian territory.
Domestic Production Roadmap and Constellation Expansion
Consortium partners confirmed that technical telemetry gathered during OBRIA NANO’s demonstration mission will guide the final system design of the operational OBRIA constellation. HIMERA and GomSpace plan to transition subsequent project phases toward the domestic localization of satellite assemblies and ground terminal manufacturing inside Ukraine, expanding sovereign engineering capacity while ensuring dedicated tactical data distribution across contested sectors.
