July 29, 2026 – South Korean SATCOM specialist Global Konet Co., Ltd. and the K-Aviation Division of Hanseo University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 29, 2026, to jointly build a next-generation multi-data link platform for uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The strategic collaboration focuses on integrating domestically produced Electronically Steered Array (ESA) antenna hardware with university flight-testing infrastructure to support long-range Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations and Line of Sight (LOS) radio-frequency (RF) communication networks up to a range of 100 km.
Technical Architecture and Data Link Integration
The joint agreement tasks both entities with co-developing a hybrid data link architecture optimized for long-endurance drone platforms. Global Konet will supply its phased array ESA terminal technology, leveraging the firm’s experience in compact beam-steering systems designed for high-vibration aerospace environments.
Under the operational scope of the platform:
- Satellite communications (SATCOM) will deliver main-line command, control, and telemetry during long-distance BVLOS transit.
- Integrated LOS RF links will provide secondary redundancy and high-bandwidth tactical data transfer within the 100 km radius.
- Flight testing and system integration will take place utilizing Hanseo University’s dedicated aviation research facilities and airfields.
Expanding Domestic SATCOM Capabilities for Defense and Commercial UAVs
The initiative builds upon Global Konet’s recent hardware validation milestones, including securing AS9100D aerospace quality certification for phased array systems and executing international aerospace phased array antenna contracts.
By coupling flat-panel ESA arrays with direct RF transceivers, the partnership aims to lower SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power, and Cost) constraints on uncrewed aircraft while maintaining uninterrupted command-and-control links in contested or degraded signal environments. The platform is targeted at strengthening South Korea’s domestic defense capabilities and securing market share across international aerospace supply chains.
Government R&D Alignment and Demonstration Roadmap
Moving forward, Global Konet and Hanseo University plan to leverage the integrated system to bid on South Korean government-funded R&D grants and military defense demonstration projects. Joint operational flight trials for the integrated 100 km BVLOS data link platform will begin following initial bench integration cycles.
