The World Teleport Association (WTA) has announced the winners of the 23rd annual Teleport Awards for Excellence during an exclusive luncheon at SATELLITE 2018 — the awards are presented each year to organizations and individuals in the teleport industry whose achievements have been deemed exceptional by the international trade association and its awards committees, made up of industry members from across the globe.
The 2018 recipients are:
Independent Teleport Operator of the Year: Telespazio
Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo (67 percent) and Thales (33 percent), is one of Europe’s leaders and one of the world’s main players in satellite solutions and services. The company has its headquarters in Rome, Italy, and is supported by a staff of approximately 2500 people. Telespazio operates worldwide through numerous companies, and has a wide international network of space centers and teleports. In particular, it is present: in France with Telespazio France; in Germany with Telespazio VEGA Deutschland, GAF and Spaceopal (a joint venture in which the German space agency DLR holds a 50% interest); in the United Kingdom with Telespazio VEGA UK; in Spain with Telespazio Iberica and in Romania with Rartel. Telespazio has a consolidated presence in South America with Telespazio Brasil and Telespazio Argentina. Teleport Technology of the Year: Alusat, Always Up by Integrasys

“The success of the teleport sector increasingly depends on scale and smart systems,” said WTA executive director Robert Bell. “The scale to serve customers’ global needs can be achieved through the global operations of a Telespazio, or through strategic partnerships among smaller companies, as we have celebrated in past awards. Automated systems like Alusat, meanwhile, allow the sector to deliver higher quality of service more efficiently and cost-effectively with each passing year.”
Teleport Executive of the Year
In addition to honoring the winner from these two awards categories, WTA presented the 2018 Teleport Executive of the Year Award to Carlos Raba, Managing Director of Santander Teleport at the luncheon, hosted by Etisalat. The more than 150 attendees included teleport, satellite and content distribution technology industry executives, as well as previous awards recipients from around the world. WTA’s director of development Louis Zacharilla emceed the event.
