SBCA’s Annual Leadership Luncheon To Tackle Today’s Telecoms Realm, Trends + Concerns For SatBroadcasting™

December 23, 2014

[SatNews] On January 6, 2015, the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association (SBCA) it will be holding its 2015 Leadership Luncheon Panel in Las Vegas.

The emergence of digital technology has placed many traditional industries at significant risk. However, it has also provided them with access to new choices. The telecommunications sector is no exception, while IP video technology threatens traditional content and distribution stakeholders, it has also given them new hope. Whether you take an expansive view or make more precise observations, even within the satellite industry, land-based technologies are capturing greater shares while offering new hybrid models for future growth.

Led by 20-year analyst and author Jimmy Schaeffler of The Carmel Group, alongside panelists including Wall Street analyst Rich Greenfield, former commissioner and senior member of the FCC Robert McDowell, and Steve Shannon of Roku's content and services department, the panel will take a bigger look at today’s telecommunications realm, focusing on pivotal trends and primary concerns while making useful predictions and pointing out the silver linings. This once-a-year, 75-minute conference panel selects from among the best spokespersons from three critical, yet divergent, subsectors within the telecommunications arena: New Media, legal and regulatory policy, and the financial sphere.

This event is being sponsored by: Applied Instruments, DIRECTV, DISH, DOW Electronics, DSI Systems, Highland Diversified Systems, Hughes Net, Perfect 10 and Vericom.

The Panelists

Jimmy Schaeffler is the chairman and chief service officer of The Carmel Group, a globally-respected consulting firm specializing in telecommunications, media, and technology litigation support, competitive analysis, and conferences. He has spent 20 years in the satellite and greater media/telecom industries, during which time he has worked as the DBS analyst for Paul Kagan Associates; published books on Digital Signage and DVRs as part of the NAB Executive Technology Briefing series; written his “Mixed Signals” column for Multichannel News; and became an expert in various new digital media and technologies, such as pay TV, broadcast TV, satellite radio, interactive TV, OTT/streaming/broadband media, and recently, also the Internet of Things, eMobility, iMobility, and the Future of Transportation.

Richard Greenfield (@RichBTIG) is Managing Director, Media and Technology analyst at BTIG and is the co-creator of the BTIG Research blog. Prior to BTIG, Mr. Greenfield was a managing director and media analyst, covering media and cable/satellite industries at Pali Capital. Prior to that, he spent four years at Fulcrum Global Partners as a media analyst. Greenfield started his career at Goldman Sachs & Co. in 1995, where he spent eight years covering entertainment, cable system and leisure industries. Greenfield is an active angel investor focused on the convergence of media, communications and commerce. Greenfield loves meeting new start-ups, demo'ing new technologies and trying to figure out the future. Greenfield has been a New Yorker his entire life, with a stop in Boston to attend Brandeis.

Robert M. McDowell, is a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Wiley Rein and Fielding. He is a former commissioner and senior member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and has been an industry leader on a multitude of complex issues in the communications field throughout his career. He provides strategic legal, business, and public policy advice to clients on important domestic and international matters in the telecommunications, media, technology, and digital media industries.

Steve Shannon heads Roku’s content and services group which is responsible for establishing new content relationships, acquiring entertainment and growing services on the Roku platform. Steve has co-founded and led many successful companies that have shaped the digital living room. Prior to Roku, Steve held senior executive roles at digital media companies RealD and Gemstar-TV Guide. Steve also has deep experience growing digital media start-ups from the ground up.
