intoPIX, a leading provider of JPEG 2000 compression solutions, has cooperated with NHK Engineering Services, Inc. (Japan) in the development of a JPEG 2000 encoding technology for 4K high-resolution image acquisition. intoPIX JPEG 2000 FPGA based IP-cores enable 4K image compression (four times the resolution of HDTV) into a single JPEG 2000 code stream in real-time and without any tiling.
NHK Engineering Services has already developed a “JPEG 2000 outdoor acquisition system for 4K high-resolution images” that makes the acquisition as easy as if it was HDTV images.  It has been used during the acquisition of high-speed running scenes (using a vehicle-mounted system) and the live broadcast of cardiac surgery. The technology developed by NHK Engineering Services in collaboration with intoPIX enables a more compact and easier system for the outdoor acquisition of 4K high-resolution images. NHK Engineering Services will continue to expand the features of this technology and is planning to make full use of JPEG 2000 characteristics, such as its scalability. This technology will be presented at the intoPIX Island booth (No. 7301 in Hall 7), at InterBEE 2011 in Japan, November 16-18.

Sencore has launched the SLM 1478, the newest member of the company’s SLM line of reliable, feature-rich RF signal analyzers designed for testing and analyzing digital TV/RF formats including NTSC, ATSC, QAM, and DOCSIS signals. The SLM 1478 is a portable digital TV/RF analyzer designed to meet the needs of TV/RF technicians and installers in today’s high-speed CATV video delivery networks. The SLM 1478 provides in-depth digital signal measurements from 4 MHz to a full 1 GHz. In order to isolate signal issues such as interference or noise, the SLM 1478 offers signal parameters including pre/post BER, average power, MER, spectral analysis, noise margin, and constellation for QAM A and B. In addition, the unit offers DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities for complete modem installation testing and both forward and return path analysis, as well as channel bonding. The SLM 1478 provides a LAN port for network connections to facilitate FTP uploading of logged test data to simplify system documentation and record keeping. A USB port provides convenient channel plans and log file transfers for fast instrument cloning. The meter features easy-to-interpret pass/fail auto-inspect results (user definable), bar graphs, and improved spectral and constellation display resolution for in-depth troubleshooting, plus an alphanumeric keypad for direct channel and frequency selection. The ergonomically designed front panel features easy-to-interpret display icons that greatly simplify setup and navigation. The rugged design meets the rigors of everyday field use, with a color display that is dependable and viewable even in the brightest sunlight.

Utah Scientific has announced that Honolulu Fox affiliate KHON-TV, the number one station in the Hawaiian Islands, has purchased a Utah Scientific master control system, routing switcher, and related equipment to take its entire operation from SD to HD. KHON will install a Utah Scientific MC-4000 two-channel master control switcher, a UTAH-400 series digital routing switcher, two MCP-2020 multichannel master control panels, three UTAH-400/MV multiviewers, two GS-4000 graphics stations, an MCP-GUI soft panel, and SoftPanel-2 GUI routing switcher. The new equipment will be the backbone of the station’s HD operation, with the routing system at the core of its infrastructure. The UTAH-400/144 unit will provide routing for all incoming and outgoing HD signals supporting KHON, as well as those of its digital channels 2.1 and 2.2. Housed in a compact 9-RU frame that includes dual power supplies and optional redundant crosspoints, the UTAH-400 is specifically designed to address the growing requirement for large switching systems with its ability to expand from 8×8 to 1152×1152 and beyond. Its revolutionary matrix architecture greatly reduces the complexity of large systems, resulting in a considerable reduction in rack space and power requirements, and yielding significant cost reductions. The MC-4000 master controller is an integrated system for handling the most demanding on-air operations in live, automated, or automation-assisted operating environments. The MC-4000 offers capabilities to handle all of the most commonly required on-air operations, including still and animated logo insertion, audio and video clip playback, and reliable, foolproof Emergency Alert System (EAS) messaging. The UTAH-400/MV multiviewers bring unparalleled convenience and ease of use to the complex job of setting up a router-based multiview display system. By combining an interactive display design tool with the flexibility of an “any picture anywhere” architecture, this system makes it simple to design screen layouts that place pictures, meters, alarm and tally indicators, and extra items like clock and logo displays. KHON will install the new system in December 2011.
