XipLink and 3Di Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications, are announcing completion of the USO satellite network for Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) applications for thousands of U.S. troops operating in Southwest Asia. The network supports personal calls via Voice over IP (VoIP) as well as Internet access to keep deployed personnel in contact with family and friends around the world. The key objective in combining the 3Di TDMA VSAT network with XipLink’s XA wireless optimization appliances is to achieve more than three times the VoIP call capacity versus the un-optimized TDMA network in order to service the thousands of troops at USO facilities throughout the region.
In this application, 3DI deployed redundant, high capacity 155 Mbps XA-30K appliances at their new Baltimore managed data center for aggregation into an optical backhaul network while using cost efficient 8 Mbps XA-4000 class optimizers at the remote access sites. In addition to TCP acceleration, streaming TCP compression and web optimization, 3Di utilizes the new XipLink Real Time (XRT) UDP optimizations to coalesce and header reduce UDP packets to meet the stringent capacity requirements of the USO network. XipLink’s XA-Series appliances include a range of industrial computing engines that scale for wireless carriers from 2 Mbps to high-performance systems running at 155 Mbps, with the best capital cost ratio in the industry.
For mobile users, XipLink also offers the XS family of specialty devices, including the palm-sized XipStick™ for MSS and mobile military VSAT requirements as well as the XS-104 single board computer for rugged computing on the move.
