SatNews’ Hello And Handshakes At IBC 2010…

September 12, 2010

Many friendships were renewed at IBC 2010 and we have a glimpse of a few of these meetings as follows…

AVL Technologies

SatNews publisher Silvano Payne and AVL Technologies founder and president Jim Oliver
[SatNews] At IBC2010 SatNews publisher Silvano Payne and AvL Technologies founder and president Jim Oliver manage a few moments for a chat at the AvL booth located in Hall 5 A49. Jim began his experience designing antenna positioners on satellites in 1967 for Lockheed Missiles and Space. AvL provides mobile satellite communication antenna systems and positioners. Their product line features a full range of lightweight, rapidly deployable, self-contained antenna and positioner systems. AvL antenna systems enable efficient and cost-effective voice, video, and data connectivity to be established quickly without the need for specialized training.

AVL is also one of the largest producers of high-performance, Ka-band ready, solid carbon-fiber CF antennas. AvL’s growing CF product line includes 1m, 1.2m, 1.6m, 2.0m and 2.4m apertures. Each of these apertures can be configured for case-based or vehicle-mount systems for diverse, world-wide applications.

CET Teleport GmbH

SatNews Publisher Silvano Payne and Jodi Morelli Principal of Global Media Marketing
[SatNews] CET Teleport GmbH, located in Hall 3 C51, is a major European teleport that offers a wide range of media broadcasting and corporate VSAT services. I has extensive disaster recovery facilities, a 24/7 Help Desk and with more than 50 antennas allows access to over 200 geostationary satellites located from 58°W to 76.5°E. SatNews Publisher Silvano Payne and Jodi Morelli of Principal Global Media Marketingis in photo on right.

The Teleport currently provides a wide range of media broadcasting and corporate VSAT services and offers Direct-To-Home (DTH) Multiplexed services to suit the individual needs of various channel owners.

Access to BT’s Global Media Network (GMN) allows for the transmission of video enabled MPLS data and voice services. This considerably increases CET’s reach and flexibility by accessing a worldwide fiber network.

CET Teleport has direct fiber connectivity with both the BT Tower and Telehouse switching centers in London. MPLS IVNP protocol is used with ASI interfacing to offer resilient and adaptable transmission facilities. The STM fiber link is bi-directional and fully redundant.

O3b

Luisa Sorrentino, VP, Marketing Communications, O3b Networks Ltd.
[SatNews] O3b Networks, funded by SES, Google Inc., Liberty Global, Inc., HSBC Principal Investments and Northbridge Venture Partners, is moving forward in its deployment of the world’s first ultra-low-latency, Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Ka-band, fiber-speed satellite network. Shown in the photo is Luisa Sorrentino, VP, Marketing Communications, O3b Networks Ltd. O3b is exhibiting in Hall 1 B51, BM10 and BM11.The network is designed to improve Internet access for millions of consumers and businesses in emerging and developed markets, as well as selected vertical markets.

According to John Finney, executive vice president, sales and marketing, “O3b was started with a vision to connect the unconnected. O3b’s importance is significant for the people we will serve, who without us, will not have the economic relevance, potential and opportunity which we all believe is so important. 2009 was a strong year for us in achieving this objective. Everyone member of our team, our vendors and consultants and even our customers have embraced this vision”

ViaLite of Pulse Power and Measurement Ltd

Martin Ryan, Sales and Marketing Director
[SatNews] Pulse Power and Measurement Ltd (PPM), founded in 1994, developed its analogue fiber optic link technology into a range of products serving a diverse range of markets including communications, test and measurement, instrumentation and military equipment. Shown in the photo on the right is Martin Ryan, sales and marketing director, the ViaLite display and demo is located in Hall 1 F29.

PPM’s ViaLite interfacility fiber links provide a reliable, high performance, cost effective alternative to conventional coax-cable systems. The L-band and 70/140MHz product variants cover 950-2150MHz and 10-200MHz respectively. They are suitable for the transmission over single mode optical fiber of downconverted C, X and Ku band signals. The links are also suitable for the transmission of L-band signals directly.

The fiber links provide a transparent connection between the satellite antenna with its up/down-converters, and the control room modems. The use of optical fiber overcomes problems inherent in copper based solutions including electrical interference, path length and electrical safety isolation.

Walton Enterprises Inc. (Walton De-ice)

David Walton, Vice President
[SatNews] Walton Enterprises Inc. (Also known as Walton De-ice) designs and manufactures an extensive line of equipment available for preventing the accumulation of snow and/or ice on satellite Earth station antennas. Shown here is vice president David Walton at his booth located in Hall 1 F49. The original Walton De-ice product includes a behind the antenna main reflector plenum (enclosure) which is heated with hot air.

These systems are for antennas ranging in size from 5-meters to 32-meters in diameter. Walton De-ice offers several options for heating including, gas heaters with their economical operation advantages or the low maintenance Stainless Steel Electric Heaters.
