The Indian Department of Telecommunications, otherwise known as DoT, has invited bids from private and state owned operators to initiate approximately 28,000 fixed line broadband exchanges and 6,000 satellite broadband sites to increase broadband penetration throughout the country, with focus on rural areas. This project will be funded from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), which has approximately INR200 billion (USD4.1B) in unused funds… this according to the Indian Economic Times publication. The successful bidders will have to share their infrastructure with other operators. The subsidy granted by the USOF will be administered in a phased manner. The final determination as to funding will be determined by the degree to which the implemented infrastructure is shared.
