EMS Technologies, Inc. [NASDAQ: ELMG] hosted an EMS Embedded Lounge at MILCOM 2008 honoring its 40 years in partnership with aerospace and defense contractors, technology providers and the U.S. military, and featured information about current EMS solutions for net-centric warfare and new advanced technologies and products for air-to-ground mobile communications.
EMS is an embedded solutions provider of RF systems that enable; critical surveillance, precision strike, and communications capabilities whose products and solutions are embedded in many systems and leading defense platforms such as; TSAT, the B-2 Bomber, the Advanced EHF military communications satellite, the F-22 Raptor, the Phalanx ship protection system, and the JSTARS airborne surveillance platform. Their customers include BAE Systems, Boeing, Harris, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Iridium and Thales.
The following are a few of EMS’s key technology contributions to military programs:
- TSAT — EMS serves on the Boeing team for the Transformation Communications Satellite (TSAT) on co-engineering and risk-reduction efforts for payload antenna systems. Once deployed, TSAT will provide an Internet-like capability that extends high-bandwidth satellite capabilities to deployed troops worldwide.
- B2 Stealth Bomber — In 2004, EMS was selected by Northrop Grumman to develop Extremely High Frequency (EHF) Satellite Communication Antenna Systems for the U.S. Air Force’s B-2 Stealth Bomber.
- F-22 — EMS provides its Intraflight Data Link (IFDL) antenna system to Lockheed Martin for the F-22 Raptor aircraft.
- Phalanx — The EMS-developed high-power switch for the Phalanx ship self-protection system known as CIWS (close in weapon system) currently operates on all U.S. warships and more than 256 foreign ships. EMS is the sole-source producer and depot for sustaining all Phalanx high-power switches.
- JSTARS — For more than a decade, EMS has supplied key radar components for the Army/Air Force Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS). These components are instrumental to the JSTARS radar and its ability to accurately map the battlefield and track targets.
EMS was founded on November 1st, 1968 as Electromagnetic Sciences by Dr. John E. Pippin and eight employees as a spin-off from Scientific Atlanta, where Pippin was head of R&D. EMS Technical Fellow John Hoover, who was EMS’s 10th employee, and today remains a senior member of EMS’s Defense & Space Systems division’s engineering staff, recalls, “I am proud of the company’s growth in the early years, we had very capable people, and we continue to have a strong base of technical staff today.”
