- MOVING ON UP… AT ASIA BROADCAST SATELLITE — Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) has appointed Arlene Kahng as its General Counsel. She will be responsible for all legal matters associated with developing and operating satellite-based businesses. Prior to joining ABS, Arlene was the Associate General Counsel with Intelsat Corporation and for PanAmSat since 1997. During her tenure at PamAmSat, she was responsible for the company’s legal affairs from negotiation and management of the company’s customer contracts with major media and entertainment companies to compliance with communications laws.
- FINANCIALLY SPEAKING… INTERNATIONAL DATACASTING — International Datacasting Corporation (TSX:IDC), who provides advanced solutions for the distribution of broadband content via satellite, announced its financial results for the first quarter ended April 30, 2008. All figures are stated in Canadian dollars. The Q1 highlights include revenue for the quarter at $5.6 million, a decrease of 3 percent from the $5.8 million recorded in the first quarter of fiscal 2008. Gross Margin was 47 percent, up from 32 percent in the Q4 of fiscal 2008 and equal to the 47 percent gross margin of Q1 2008. EBITDA was ($18,634), compared to $419,005 a year earlier. And net income was ($217,000) or $0.00 per share in Q1 2009, compared to $56,000 or $0.00 per share in the same quarter from the previous year. IDC also released new products in the digital cinema, IPTV, and radio broadcasting markets and participated in several major industry tradeshows.
- FCC FILING FOCUS — XM Radio wants to operate a 2 kW EIRP terrestrial repeater at different U.S. PGA Tour events from July 23rd through October 12th. The company filed a request for such with the FCC and the repeater would operate within the 2332.2 to 2345 MHz frequency band that’s allocated for SDARS (Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service)—frequencies assigned for XM’s exclusive use. The reason for this request is that the PGA Tour Network is carried as part of the company’s programming. XM offers portable, satellite radios for sale or rent to spectators at these events. Listeners are then able to track the leader board and follow real-time action around the course via the satradios. The repeaters are necessary to overcome the heavy foliage on the golf course that blocks direct reception of the satellite signal. Complete fiscal report here…

BUSINESS — ViaSat Inc.(NASDAQ: VSAT) CEO and Chairman Mark Dankberg has been named the recipient of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Aerospace International Communications Award for 2008. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of aerospace communications. This year the AIAA singled out Mr. Dankberg “for shepherding ViaSat into a leading satellite communications company through outstanding leadership and technical expertise.” The award has a rich history of recognizing the accomplishments of pioneers in the satellite and communications field. “I’m honored to receive this award from AIAA,” said Mr. Dankberg. “It’s a reflection of the hard work, creativity and contributions that all of our employees have made to ViaSat and the aerospace industry as a whole. We thrive on innovation and especially appreciate being recognized in this way by the AIAA.” Mr. Dankberg is a co-founder of ViaSat and has served as Chairman and CEO since inception.
