- Alltel will soon become integrated with Verizon Wireless, as the latter has agreed to acquire the former for a tad over $28 billion, of which some $5.9 will be cash and $22.2 billion of debt. This acquisition is expected to be completed by the close of this year.
- Content management and delivery company GlobeCast and Pacific Century Group have reached a conditional agreement for the acquisition by GlobeCast Asia of Hong Kong-based broadcast services company Pacific Century Matrix (HK) Limited (PCM). When the transaction is complete, PCM will be renamed GlobeCast Hong Kong. becoming GlobeCast’s fifth office in Asia and their 18th office, worldwide. The acquisition will give PCM clients access to the worldwide reach of GlobeCast, a full subsidiary of France Telecom, while retaining PCM’s expertise and personnel. Company clients will benefit from the combined resources, including two major technical hubs in Singapore and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong teleport and MCR facility will also be interconnected with GlobeCast’s 12 other teleports and technical operations centres around the world, as well as with the company’s extensive satellite and fibre content distribution network. The result will be an increased capacity—Singapore + Hong Kong
- Intelsat, Ltd. has signed a multi-year agreement with Rikor TV for the distribution of interactive HD services into Russia. Under the agreement, Intelsat will provide transmission services to Rikor on its Intelsat 904 satellite located at 60° E. This will allow Rikor’s programming to reach cable operators and DTH customers in Western and Central Russia, accessing more than 80 percent of the Russian population. Rikor subscribers will now be able to participate in interactive applications such as live polling events and real-time chats, making payments and purchases, and obtaining background information about the programming content that is being viewed—Pembroke, Florida
- Lavell Systems has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase SkyPort Global Communications, Inc. Lavell provides secure, managed network and communications solutions. SkyPort is successfully involved in carrier-class satellite communications. Among that firm’s recent successes has been a contract with Cisco to provide satellite solutions for Cisco’s Emergency Response Network. This transaction is expected to close by the end of July—Reston, Virginia + Houston, Texas
