Geffen Amplifies New Products
Connectivity solutions provider Gefen announced the availability of two new distribution amplifiers for component video systems. The 1:4 Component/Audio CAT-5 Distribution Amplifier and the 1:8 Component/Audio CAT-5 Distribution Amplifier both enable the delivery of component video to multiple displays. Each solution is equipped with RCA (left/right) analog and digital (S/PDIF and TOSlink) audio inputs, offering an easy method of sending both audio and video to four or eight remote locations from a single source. The 1:4 Component/Audio CAT-5 Distribution Amplifier transmits four component video signals with high definition resolutions to 1080p up to 1000 feet in distance. Audio is delivered alongside the video in both analog and digital formats. The amp is equipped with four RJ-45 outputs, which provide a link to four receiver units that can be placed up to 1000 feet from the source using CAT-5 cables. The 1:8 Component/Audio CAT-5 Distribution Amplifier operates with the same functionality and features, but with a distribution to eight displays. Audio and video are delivered to their remote destinations over just one CAT-5 cable making this a useful and cost-effective method of delivering high definition audio and video throughout multi-room locations. Both systems are completed with power supplies, component and audio cables and the sender/distribution amplifier. Receivers are sold separately enabling customers to tailor the amount of receivers required—Chatsworth, California

CopperHeads + Diamondbacks From Telecast Slither Into Show
Telecast will display at the 2008 NAB Show two new modules that are now shipping in support of the award-winning openGear terminal equipment platform from Ross Video. openGear is based on an open-architecture, 2RU modular frame, designed to accommodate up to 10 cards. Plus, the company’s new CopperHead DLV3X1 camera-mounted fiber optic HD Dual-Link Video system will be on display. This system converts electrical signals to fiber to move uncompressed 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 signals between the camera head and a recording device over a single, lightweight, battle-rated fiber optic cable. By replacing three or four coax cables, the DLV3X1 reduces the bulk and weight of camera cabling and increases signal transmission distances from several hundred feet to as far as nine miles. The compact unit (3.7-inches by 5.5-inches by-1.75 inches) sits between virtually any dual-link 4:4:4 camera and its battery. Then there’s their new DiamondBack 4×4 Video Multiplexer with Ethernet which transmits four broadcast-quality analog video signals in each direction and features additional inputs to accommodate audio, intercom, and data signals from the company’s Adder II audio multiplexer line. The unit also provides built-in facilities for 10/100 Ethernet transmission—Worcester, Massachusetts

Harris Survey Reveals DTV Transition Should Be Met
One year before the nationwide mandatory sign-off of analog television transmission, scheduled for February 17, 2009, U.S. broadcasters said they expect to meet this major milestone as part of their ongoing transition to the adoption of digital TV (DTV). The findings resulted from a survey released by Harris Corporation. In addition to meeting the deadline to convert over-the-air transmission from analog to digital, the survey showed that most broadcasters plan to upgrade their facilities to provide consumers with local programming and news that originates in high definition (HD), while also providing local TV content via the Internet and mobile devices, including cell phones, PDAs and laptop computers. The survey revealed:
- 66 percent of broadcasters plan to provide consumers with more programming in HD, with its significantly superior picture and sound quality
- 55 percent said they will use the additional channels resulting from DTV’s superior spectrum efficiency to multicast more local news, sports, weather, traffic and other community interest programs
- 50 percent expect to broadcast live programming over the Internet and derive additional revenue from their station’s Web site
- 28 percent of broadcasters expect to provide programming over mobile handheld devices including cellular phones, PDAs and laptop computers
