- According to reports, Iran has indicated their Kavoshgar (Explorer) space probe that reached space on the back of rocket earlier this month is now sending data back to Earth. The deputy head of Iran’s space organization informed the government-controlled newspaper Iran that the probe attained an altitude of 125 to 155 miles and real-time data has been sent to the ground station to make certain the systems are working properly. Their satellite is now expected to launch sometime this summer and will orbit at 400 miles above the Earth. Both the United States and Russia commented regarding the probe’s launch—”condemned” by the former and “unfortunate” by the latter. In October of 2005, a Russian rocket launched the Russian-manufactured Sina-1 satellite into orbit for Iran. And to make certain everyone was paying attention, the newspaper also stated the country has successfully tested an “upgraded” version of the surface-to-air missile defense system, also Russian made—Tehran, Iran
