International Launch Services (ILS) is set to launch the THOR 5 satellite aboard a Proton M/Breeze M launch vehicle. The launch is scheduled for February 10th at the Baikonur launch center in Kazakhstan at 06:33 EST. To lift-off from Launch Pad 39, the THOR 5 satellite was manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation and the launch vehicle by Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center. Built on a STAR 2 platform, the THOR 5 weighs 4,277 lb. (1940 kg) and the client is Telenor Satellite Broadcasting, Oslo, Norway, who will use the satellite for various services in FSS and BSS throughout the Nordic, European and Middle Eastern areas of our globe.
THOR 5 packs 24 active Ku-band transponders, 15 for FSS (Fixed Satellite Service) and 9 for BSS (Broadcast Satellite Service), with 5 active BSS transponders available via steerable antenna. With a service life of 15 years, THOR 5 will occupy an orbital location of 1° W. The THOR 5 is going to replace the THOR II satellite. To view the event, the live broadcast in North America will occur on Galaxy 26, transponder 9, 93° W, C-band, in analog NTSC, with a vertical downlink of 3880 MHz, with the broadcast to start at approximately 6:13 a.m. For the European live feed, this will be on New Skies NSS-7, transponder WHL4/EUH3, Channel 1, at 338° W, Ku-band, in digital PAL, with horizontal downlink of 11095.6 MHz.
