A 14 percent stake of ProtoStar I satellite is going to cost Indian company, Subhash Chandra-promo’d, Agrani Satellite some $64 million, with the acquiring company obtaining all 14 Ku-band transponders of the satellite. This will allow Dish TV to offer even more channels to its Direct-To-Home (DTH) subs. Scheduled to launch in May of 2008 from Kourou in French Guyana, ProtoStar I will be ProtoStar‘s first satellite. The satellite also packs 12 C-band transponders. The company has already informed one and all they would be leasing out five of those C-bands to PlanetSky Ltd. of Limassol, Cyprus.
ProtoStar Ltd. is a Bermuda corporation and New Enterprise Associates, VantagePoint Venture Partners and RedShift Ventures fund the firm. ProtoStar acquires, launches and operates high-power geostationary sats for DTH satTV for distribution in the Asia-Pacific region. Subhash Chandra pioneered the successful Zee TV and he also packages a variety of other entertainment venues, such as cinema multiplexes, lotteries and theme parks as well as a cricket league in India.
