Two additional SkyEdge sathub stations and thousands of VSATs are all part of a new network expansion by Optus with Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. [NASDAQ:GILT]. SkyEdge VSAT technology will provide cost-effective connectivity to regions in Australia that otherwise would not benefit from broadband Internet services. The SkyEdge platform is able to serve tens of thousands of subs. It provides high-speed IP connectivity with excellent space segment efficiency. One of the platform’s advanced features is embedded Internet acceleration.
Optus deployed one of the very first SkyEdge networks and has since expanded it several times. With this latest expansion, Optus will operate one of the world’s largest Gilat satellite hub installations, comprised of more than 20,000 Gilat VSAT’s to serve corporate, government and residential customers. This expansion will also support the Australian government’s ABG program, providing registered ISPs with incentive payments to supply higher bandwidth services to regional, rural and remote areas of the country—Petah Tikva, Israel
