More than 1,000 square kilometers of hi-res, IKONOS satellite imagery has been donated by GeoEye, Inc. [NASDAQ:GEOY] and the company’s Foundation to international conservation groups working on gorilla preservation projects. The recent massacre of a family of mountain gorillas in Africa’s Virunga National Park (the home of 60 percent of the world’s gorilla population) prompted increased attention to this horrific situation. The GeoEye Foundation was approached by Satellite Imaging Corporation of Houston, who applied for the grant on behalf of the conservation groups, with the grant approved in two days. The groups include the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, the Central African Regional Program for the Environment, International Gorilla Conservation Program, Zoological Society of London and the African Conservation Fund—Dulles, Virginia
