The Royal Navy has enhanced the fleet with new Livewire Digital broadcast systems. The material will be used for both internal purposes, such as training, and for interaction with the broadcast news channels. Six Royal Navy ships have now been equipped with Livewire’s M-Link Voyager systems; the rest of the fleet have been equipped with Livewire’s IP-Reporter. The Livewire Digital technology enables video footage to be delivered to the Navy’s Fleet HQ efficiently via satellite, from mid ocean. The footage can then be distributed to news channels and used for internal purposes such as training.
The Royal Navy and its partners have recently used the Livewire equipment on recently following several successful drug busts facilitated by the HMS Ocean. Video footage from the drug bust in June, when cocaine with an estimated street value of £29m was seized, was edited, compressed and transmitted back to base using M-Link’s efficient protocols. Livewire Digital’s IP-Reporter software is simple to use on local PCs or laptops, turning them into news desks with a video reporting capability. The integrated top-and-tail Non-Linear Editing (NLE) allows the users to quick-edit the footage before filing them to the M-Link servers. Where communication links are intermittent or unreliable, such as in mid ocean environments, M-Link’s protocols make efficient use of the available bandwidth, reducing costs and transmission times. M-Link is a highly mobile, reliable and compact system, which can be deployed and operated by a single person in remote and hostile locations—Surrey, United Kingdom
