Being selected by NASA to provide support for their many programs is similar to receiving a gold start for exceptional work from your teacher when you were in kindergarten. So here’s a gold star to The Boeing Company as they have been selected as the contractor to provide manufacturing support for the design and construction of the upper stage of the Ares 1 rocket. This puppy is going to launch astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) as well as return us Earthlings once again to the Moon.
Boeing is going to be responsible for manufacturing a ground test vehicle, three flight test units and six production flight units. These will support NASA’s flight manifest through 2016. NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans is where the final assembly of the upper stage will occur.
This new contract for Boeing is cost-plus-award-fee. The performance period is September 1, 2007, through December 31st, 2016. The contract is valued at $514.7 million. Management of the Ares I upper stage development projects is handled by NASA’s Marshal Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for NASA’s Constellation Program—Washington, DC—August 30, 2007
