Class K certification – no, this is not a substitute classification for a high school diploma, nor is it a special group of marathon runners… Class K certification is the highest reliability level prescribed by MIL-PRF-38534. When a company complies with this standard, they are then allowed to design and manufacture microelectronic assemblies for mission-critical defense and space programs. In other words, this classification IS worth its weight in business.
One of the leading suppliers of defense grade Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) semiconductor packaging, as well as advanced, self-contained, multi-chip and system-in-a-chip modules, happens to be White Electronic Designs Corporation (NASDAQ:WEDC). The company has announced they have achieved Class K certification, making them of only 16 organizations that have achieved this goal. Dan Tarantine, Executive Vice President for White Electronic Designs Corporation (WEDC), said “This certification confirms WEDC as the premier microelectronics solutions partner in constructing extended environment, high-reliability, high-density products.”
Class K certification is awarded by the Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC) after a rigorous audit to confirm compliance to the highest quality levels required for space applications. The company’s display segment designs and manufactures enhanced and reinforced high-legibility, flat-panel displays for aerospace and defense systems, as well as the commercial and medical environs. Additionally, WEDC has also been awarded ISO 9001:2000 / AS9100B certification—Phoenix, Arizona—August 29, 2007
