The SATCOM division of EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG) has just benefited from a new agreement worth approximately $26 million—the company is going to design the nextgen, dual-mode satellite and GSM phone for Inmarsat Global Ltd. This definitely expands EMS’ market beyond aeronautical broadband and is an important opportunity for the company. The new phone will offer voice, 2.4 kbps data services, and text messaging.
The new phone will support both terrestrial GSM and GMR-2+. An omni antenna will be used and will be able to detect if a user is in a cell coverage area and, if not, will automatically switch to the global satellite network. This will also allow Inmarsat to better manage their I-4 spot-beam allocations. The phone will be built around a core module that can be incorporated into other terminals for mobile applications. And, as they say, timing is everything. The plan is to have this 2nd-gen product ready around the launch of Inmarsat’s third I-4 satellite early next year. Inmarsat’s satellite phone service is currently focused on Asia, Africa and the Middle East—Atlanta, Georgia—August 23, 2007
