WASHINGTON — Earth observation startup Orbital Sentry is developing a persistent geostationary infrared monitoring system designed to provide continuous thermal intelligence and rapid wildfire detection across the western United States.

While low Earth orbit constellations provide periodic revisits, the Washington-based company is commercializing fixed geostationary orbit (GEO) platforms to deliver continuous data streams to electric utilities, catastrophe underwriters, and emergency response agencies.
Continuous Staring vs. Low Earth Orbit Revisit Constraints
Conventional wildfire remote sensing relies on sun-synchronous satellites such as the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) and dedicated small satellite constellations like the Muon Space FireSat multi-mission network. While these orbital assets provide high spatial resolution, their low-altitude passes create observation gaps of hours between thermal snapshots.
Orbital Sentry’s flagship payload architecture, designated Fire Sentry, places mid-wave and long-wave infrared sensors alongside wide-area optical instruments at 35,786 kilometers altitude. By matching Earth’s rotational velocity, the geostationary payload continuously observes the same landmass, detecting high-temperature anomalies within seconds of ignition. The persistent dwell time allows onboard algorithms to filter out transient false alarms and track active fire perimeters minute by minute, feeding live vector telemetry into fire spread models.
Capitalization and Commercial Demonstration Roadmap
The venture emerged from stealth after closing a pre-seed financing round led by deep-tech investor Ridgeline, with participation from biodiversity fund Superorganism and Hustle Fund. Seed capital is designated for optical sensor prototyping, calibration bench testing, and integration with incident response software. The company has also partnered with the InnSure Creation Labs climate incubator to format continuous thermal feeds directly into insurance catastrophe modeling systems.
Orbital Sentry is currently conducting focal plane array testing and payload engineering ahead of an orbital demonstration mission. The initial spacecraft deployment will establish a dedicated monitoring cone over the North American continent before the company expands coverage with additional geostationary nodes.
