On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Upland, Indiana-based small satellite manufacturer NearSpace Launch Inc. (NSL) announced plans to launch its TROOP-F6 spacecraft aboard SpaceX’s Bandwagon-6 rideshare mission in April 2027.

Operating as both satellite owner and mission manager, NSL will utilize the orbital platform to conduct internal technology demonstrations and support commercial and institutional hosted payloads focused on space weather monitoring and space situational awareness (SSA).
Flight Heritage and Constellation Lineage
The upcoming mission builds upon the flight heritage of the company’s previous TROOP orbital demonstrators, including the TROOP-3 mission launched aboard Transporter-5 and the TROOP-F2 flight.
The demonstration follows NSL’s integration of the SPEAR constellation aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-17 mission, which deployed space environment sensors for national security applications. To date, NSL has supported the deployment of more than 1,000 systems and subsystems in orbit, including custom CubeSats, EyeStar satellite communications transceivers, and Black Box flight recorder tracking systems.
Payload Architecture and Sensor Capabilities
TROOP-F6 is configured as a multi-mission SmallSat platform engineered for mid-inclination low Earth orbit:
- Environmental Monitoring: Accommodates in-situ space weather diagnostic sensors to measure ionospheric plasma density, orbital radiation flux, and solar particle events.
- Space Situational Awareness: Integrates tracking and telemetry instruments to detect orbital debris, verify orbital ephemerides, and evaluate space traffic safety.
- Communications Bus: Utilizes NSL’s standardized modular bus avionics and EyeStar real-time radio architecture, providing continuous crosslink telemetry via commercial communications constellations.
- Hosted Payload Accommodations: Allocates modular physical volume, dedicated power regulation, and high-speed data interfaces for third-party institutional and research sensors.
Executive Perspectives and Deployment Timeline
Company leadership highlighted the role of responsive spacecraft buses in de-risking orbital technology.
“TROOP-F6 marks an important step for NSL, bringing together advanced capabilities that support our vision for future space missions,” said Matthew Voss, President of NearSpace Launch. “This mission allows us to test new technologies in space, demonstrate rapid development and deployment, expand our communications capabilities, and provide opportunities for hosted payload customers, all while continuing to build on our flight heritage.”
The spacecraft is scheduled to launch to a mid-inclination low Earth orbit in April 2027 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station aboard SpaceX’s Bandwagon-6 rideshare flight.
