On Monday, September 7, 2026, Japanese aerospace manufacturer Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and fabless semiconductor provider EdgeCortix Inc. announced the execution of a multi-year Teaming Agreement.

The multi-million-dollar program, spanning from 2026 through 2028, combines Kawasaki’s defense engineering capabilities with EdgeCortix’s energy-efficient artificial intelligence processing hardware and software platforms to develop next-generation AI-enabled aerial defense systems.
Program History and Technical Heritage
The partnership represents an expansion of EdgeCortix’s defense processing footprint across the Indo-Pacific region and Western defense architectures. The company previously validated its edge compute stack in military environments, receiving a Success Memorandum from the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) after demonstrating battlefield connectivity with the U.S. Air Force.
Concurrently, EdgeCortix expanded its hardware deployments into orbital platforms, testing its SAKURA-II AI coprocessor for radiation resiliency under NASA’s Electronic Parts and Packaging Program.
Chiplet Computing and MERA Software Specifications
Under the initial scope, the companies will execute feasibility studies, system integration, and prototype platform development to embed low-latency AI compute directly onto aerial mission systems:
- Chiplet-Based Acceleration: Utilizes EdgeCortix’s energy-efficient, chiplet-based AI coprocessor architecture to deliver high-throughput neural network processing within constrained power and thermal envelopes.
- MERA Compiler Stack: Integrates the proprietary MERA compiler and software framework, enabling runtime-reconfigurable AI inference across heterogeneous onboard mission computers.
- Tactical Processing at the Edge: Performs real-time sensor fusion, object recognition, and threat assessment at the point of data generation, reducing transmission latency and bandwidth demands on tactical data links.

Multi-Year Operational Roadmap
The initial phase of the multi-year program will focus on technology integration and bench testing of prototype hardware modules through late 2026. Following initial feasibility milestones, Kawasaki and EdgeCortix plan to transition the integrated edge AI compute platform into flight-qualification testing on prototype aerial defense platforms through 2028.
