In a major talent acquisition for the streaming landscape, Netflix has signed a definitive multi-year creative partnership with Proximity Media Television.

The multimedia production company was founded by acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed, Sinners), alongside co-founders Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.
Under the terms of the exclusive agreement, Proximity Media’s television division will develop and produce a fresh slate of original scripted series exclusively for Netflix.
A Proven Track Record of Commercial and Critical Hits
Proximity Media has rapidly established itself as a premier destination for high-impact, culturally resonant storytelling. Led operationally by Vice President of Television Simone Harris, the studio’s television department has built a highly successful production portfolio, including:
- Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda: Highly anticipated series developed in direct collaboration with Marvel Studios for Disney+.
- Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time: A landmark documentary series for National Geographic that shattered records to become the network’s most-watched streaming series in the United States.
- Active Premium Pilots: The team is currently actively producing highly anticipated pilots, including a newly reimagined iteration of The X-Files starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, as well as a live-action adaptation of the graphic novel Southern Bastards, starring Kevin Bacon.
The creative muscle of the partnership is anchored heavily by Ryan Coogler’s massive box-office pedigree. Coogler recently wrote, directed, and produced the original feature film Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan. The project emerged as the highest-grossing completely original film of 2025, amassing more than $365 million globally.
Bridging Creative Vision with Global Scale
The collaboration allows Netflix to deepen its relationship with visionary, event-driven creators as competition for premium IP remains fierce across the streaming ecosystem.
“We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects,” said founders Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian in a joint statement. “As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling.”
Jinny Howe, Netflix Head of US and Canada Scripted Series, echoed the enthusiasm, highlighting the Proximity team’s unique knack for pushing narrative boundaries. Howe noted that Netflix is eager to work directly alongside the studio’s executive team to bring Proximity’s next generation of groundbreaking, diverse series to life for its global subscriber base.
