Satellite communications (SATCOM) technology is nowadays becoming the most important communication system available on the modern battlefield. The dynamics of progress in this sphere causes many current solutions to become obsolete, in particular military technologies.
This means that users of satellite networks are forced to constantly implement modern technologies to ensure the highest operational efficiency. SATCOM technology is the answer to the needs of present battlefield.
Currently, the expansion program of satellite communication network being at the disposal of Polish Armed Forces is being realized. Intensive modernization of the communication system began in 2018 when the Armament Inspectorate (now Armament Agency) signed a contract for the development of a satellite Earth station. In 2022 another proceeding was finalized as a result of which the supplier of 100 units of Manpack class terminals was selected, while the procedure for the supply of 69 Flyaway terminals compatible with the delivered system is still not completed.
The Polish Armament Agency will receive 100 units of Manpack Terminals produced by Polish-based manufacturer – GISS. The project contract was issued on February 28, 2022, and covers implementation between 2022 and 2024. The PLN 38.1 million ($8.8 million) contract will involve the delivery of portable SHF tactical-level satellite terminals, which will provide reliable, mobile, and territorially unlimited SATCOM, the Armament Agency announcement stated.
As part of the months-long bid preparation, a number of customizations were made to the existing Manpack COBALT terminal to meet end-user requirements. Polish MoD requires that the terminal shall be operational with two sizes of antenna reflector and provide SCPC and TDMA operation. As part of the proposed solution – GISS presented a system integrating the equipment of Teledyne Paradise Datacom and ND Satcom GmbH.
Within the scope of the supplied equipment, GISS will carry out deliveries comprising Terminals, spare parts kits, measurement equipment, as well as equipment enabling operation of the supplied terminals with the X-band. The primary operating band of the terminal is Ku band.
