Orbital Micro Systems (OMS) has named Greg Porter as UK business development manager – in this capacity, he will be responsible for the company’s sales and business partnerships throughout the UK — his appointment is effective immediately.

Porter brings a wealth of expertise and experience in aviation and weather science to the company. His background includes working for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on air traffic planning and management, authoring weather related materials for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and as a meteorologist and weather forecaster for the U.S. National Weather Service and The Washington Post newspaper.
Leveraging his specialization in operational weather and aviation forecasting, Porter will work with OMS’ International Center for Earth Data (ICED) team in Edinburgh, Scotland to formulate market-ready data offerings to address critical business needs for commercial aviation and maritime transportation firms, insurance and reinsurance providers, agricultural producers, and government agencies.
ICED is a leading-edge weather data platform designed to classify and correlate data sourced from satellites as well as other sensors and sounders, and delivering actionable data to customers within a matter of minutes from the original observation.
OMS anticipates delivering observation data from its first satellite to ICED during the third quarter of 2019. The company plans to place six to eight more weather observation satellites in orbit throughout the next 12 months, which will provide data collection revisit rates of approximately two hours, compared to the 3 to 72 hour data collection intervals available through existing systems. All the data OMS collects will pass through its ICED facility.
