[SatNews] Reliable, feature-rich, communication technology for public safety and utilities maintenance are in focus this week, as IWCE 2015 exhibitor Cobham SATCOM brings its innovative EXPLORER Push-to-Talk (PTT) solution to the Las Vegas Convention Center.
At IWCE 2015, Cobham SATCOM will detail the safety and operational benefits of the EXPLORER PTT system during the show, in addition to highlighting upgraded functionality and integration potential. The latter is a vital aspect to EXPLORER PTT’s roll-out with US public safety services, whose existing systems can be combined with Cobham SATCOM’s solution. EXPLORER PTT will also be in the spotlight of national and local law enforcement agencies later this month, as Cobham SATCOM provides nine Beverly Hills Police Department vehicles with the system, to use during the Baker to Vegas race.
Cobham SATCOM’s unique Push-To-Talk system is based on EXPLORER BGAN terminals and delivers extended coverage, improved call quality and lower costs for mobile workforce communications.

Developed as part of Cobham SATCOM’s EXPLORER family of Inmarsat and VSAT satellite terminals, EXPLORER PTT is a fully managed communications solution, offering reliable, cost effective vehicular communication for law enforcement, EMS and fire services in addition to utility maintenance fleets and transportation companies. EXPLORER PTT is a sophisticated IP based voice solution, designed to complement existing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems or act independently in areas where a terrestrial LMR network is not practical or possible. Consisting of network server infrastructure and compact in-vehicle terminals, the system adds cost effective PTT capabilities to hybrid data networks such as terrestrial 3G/4G/LTE and FirstNet, combined with the Inmarsat BGAN satellite network, ensuring optimal balance between cost and availability.
EXPLORER PTT is already deployed with a utilities company working in remote areas of Brazil, and is currently being evaluated by one of the USA’s largest railway operators. Strong interest has been shown by law enforcement and emergency services in America, who have recognized the system’s ability to improve personnel safety and operational efficiency through improved dispatch center communications.
