Comtech EF Data Corporation announced availability of IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) hardware support for the CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem which is the satellite industry’s first modem to provide hardware support for PTP, significantly improving the synchronization accuracy when backhauling over satellite.

Globally, mobile operators are migrating backhaul to packet transport to support the evolution towards higher speed packet access. PTP has emerged as the key network technology to synchronize frequency, time and phase over a packet network. It is based on a hierarchical master-slave architecture where one or more grandmaster clocks provide synchronization for slave network nodes. The CDM-625 with PTP facilitates unprecedented synchronization accuracy for satellite-based 2G and 3G mobile backhaul over packet networks.
Other optimization enhancements are also available for the CDM-625, including the patent-pending Carrier-in-Carrier Automatic Power Control and jumbo Ethernet frame support. The Carrier-in-Carrier Automatic Power Control mechanism enables CDM-625 modems on both sides of a DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® link to automatically measure and compensate for rain loss while maintaining the total composite power. Carrier-in-Carrier Automatic Power Control also enables the CDM-625 modems to share link margin, which further enhances overall availability.
The need for larger Ethernet frames for improved efficiency continues to grow with increased transmission speeds and usage of VLAN and MPLS. Lack of jumbo Ethernet frame support leads to fragmentation and increased overhead. The CDM-625 now supports jumbo Ethernet frames up to 2048 bytes. “Our leadership in SCPC modems is largely attributed to delivering technologies that decrease OPEX / CAPEX and increase satellite link throughput,” commented Daniel Enns, Senior Vice President Strategic Marketing and Business Development for Comtech EF Data.
