TRIG is a new pocket-sized tracker/responder developed by Trident Sensors which uses GPS technology and the Iridium satellite network to transmit and receive data anywhere in the world. The rugged unit transmits accurate GPS positions, data and messages at regular user-defined intervals, which can be sent to email addresses, mobile phones, websites and other remote stations. Alert functions allow users to report their status and to call for assistance at the push of a button. The user knows that help will be on the way when TRIG’s LED display turns blue, signifying acknowledgement of the alert by a controller. Bluetooth capability enables the unit to link to a smartphone, laptop or other Bluetooth device. This makes it simple to send and receive emails or SMS messages anywhere in the world, from deserts and oceans to mountains and the poles. It also allows the linked device to act as a display and carry out data processing and graphics functions.
TRIG is not just useful for tracking people. It can be mounted on vehicles, ships, aircraft, containers, ocean buoys, ice floes etc to transmit precise information on their whereabouts and their local environment such as temperature and pressure. As well as applications in scientific, industrial and defence fields, the units can be used to track competitors in adventure sports such as cycling, yachting and gliding. Advanced electronics ensure that the rechargeable unit has a long battery life. It weighs only 265g and is as small as a smartphone. With an anodised aluminium and polymer housing, it is rated dustproof and waterproof to IP68. TRIG makes use of the Iridium satellite constellation of 66 satellites for two-way communication anywhere in the world, including polar regions. This is possible because the Iridium satellites are placed in polar orbits, unlike rival systems which do not pass over higher latitudes.
