SatBroadcasting™ — This report includes IntoPIX, KIT Digital + Harmonic, Haivision, Nevion + SES

October 10, 2011

[SatNews] For those involved in the SatBroadcasting™ environment, here is important market segment news that could well be of interest to you…

  • intoPIX will demo its new FGPA-based JPEG2000 ultra-low latency codec at the CCW Expo in New York. Reaching an end-to-end latency lower than 10 milliseconds, the new FPGA IP-Cores address real-time communication and fast response interactive video applications where zero latency is crucial. intoPIX’ expertise in JPEG2000 and FPGA integration have resulted in optimizing the process delay down to less than one frame for a full encoding and decoding cycle, while maintaining the same compression efficiency. As of today, intoPIX offers the only JPEG 2000 implementation capable of achieving such performance. “Broadcasting of live events, sharing vivid telepresence sessions and remotely controlling post-production tools and images are applications which require that perfect combination of visually lossless quality, professional workflow and highly responsive interactive manipulation. Yes, your live image matters, and we care!”, says Jean-Francois Nivart, CSO at intoPIX. More info will be available at intoPIX booth 864.

  • KIT digital Inc. (NASDAQ: KITD) and Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) now have a strategic partnership that harnesses their complementary product portfolios to offer an end-to-end multiscreen video architecture optimally managed for maximum performance. The two companies are working together to create solutions that enable tier-one video providers to expand existing broadcast and pay TV services efficiently with new multiplatform, multidevice delivery models. Supplying video service and content providers with proven, carrier-grade technologies and strategic project management skills, the partnership draws on years of experience delivering platform solutions to power complex, demanding video deployments. The integrated solution will combine product offerings to deliver:
    • An end-to-end video solution leveraging KIT Cosmos, KIT digital’s video asset management platform, and Harmonic’s comprehensive multicodec, multiformat video processing and storage technology, which enables customers to deliver and optimize video services for live linear feeds, catch-up and start-over TV, and video-on-demand with a rich user experience
    • A unified video infrastructure designed specifically for servicing both traditional broadcast and emerging multiscreen devices with maximum quality and operational efficiency
    • A Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) or on-site operational model that fits the end customer’s most stringent reliability requirements while handling day-to-day workflows

  • Haivision will display its newly acquired KulaByte software encoder. The product will be on display at Streaming Media Europe 2011. The KulaByte encoder allows users to deliver the easiest, most reliable connected solutions for multisite needs. Web-based delivery combined with the best-in-class adaptive player technology allows for dynamic, real-time updates to deliver reliable video to a desktop or mobile device. KulaByte allows users to leverage connectivity to multisite locations to distribute HD video in difficult network environments, such as the Internet, with a guarantee of consistent high-quality video at low bit rates. This solution provides the added ability to control the receiving stream from any location with a cloud-based DVR solution, making it easier than ever to sort through the live stream and find the desired destination to play back on command directly from the player. With its simple interfacing tools, the ease of use is undeniable. Anyone from trained employees to volunteer teams can reliably deliver the desired results week after week. Haivision will also show off the new HyperStream at the show. HyperStream is capable of transforming live video source streams into all of the many formats and data rates required to distribute live video via the Internet. HyperStream delivers live transcoded source video streams to every screen regardless of device, player, screen size, or bandwidth. HyperStream allows event producers to rethink their traditional approach to live webcasting. With audiences increasingly consuming media on many different types of devices and networks, HyperStream provides high-quality, reliable, consistent output streams to the full range of playback devices, even when streaming from challenging low-bandwidth environments. Preparing the multiple renditions needed for all of these devices and bit rates previously required additional investment in on-site encoding hardware, bandwidth, and infrastructure. HyperStream eliminates this wasteful per-event overspending and complexity, in favor of a flexible, comprehensive cloud-based live streaming platform. Then there’s the Company’s Makito™ encoder, which offers the most efficient and affordable distribution, capture, and rebroadcast of HD video. The Makito represents the first and only full-featured high-performance compact encoder to combine the efficiencies of H.264 video compression and the image quality of full HD video within a very small form factor at a competitive price point. Recently upgraded to revision 1.5, the Makito now supports constant bit rate (CBR) encoding to assure transport and system-wide compatibilities and, optionally, real-time metadata capabilities. The metadata option allows users to incorporate KLV metadata into the compressed video stream with the data obtained from the serial port, from auxiliary data fields within the digital video stream, or from UDP network sources. The Makito provides H.264 encoding at up to 1080p60 with the lowest available end-to-end latencies.
Also at Streaming Media Europe will be the Makito Air™, a ruggedized version engineered for airborne video and ideal for military, security, and law enforcement applications. Features include added real-time metadata (KLV and CoT) support, operation with MIL-STD connectors, and compliance with stringent DO-160 specifications.

  • Nevion, a provider of managed video services for broadcasters, service providers, and government entities worldwide, will showcase its new VideoIPath solution for IP networks for the first time in North America. The product will be shown at HD World, part of Content & Communications World, taking place on October 12 – 13 at booth #801 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. VideoIPath’s managed video services for broadcasters’ and service providers’ IP and optical networks are designed to easily facilitate remote production, a key capability in the current climate of increasing, global live broadcasting. VideoIPath for IP contribution networks provides IP video transport with comprehensive, end-to-end control, monitoring and management. It features comprehensive managed video services for complete provisioning, connection management, bandwidth optimization, analytics and network inventory. It greatly reduces the cost structure by bringing video services into the IP environment, where scalability is dramatically increasing and port costs are decreasing. The product now includes the VS902, a powerful new universal IP video transport platform that accepts any SDI or ASI input and provides both uncompressed encapsulation to IP and a choice of JPEG 2000 or H.264 compression. It offers transport protected by Streaming Intelligent Packet Switching (SIPS), a technology developed by Nevion as a more advanced transport protection method that provides perfect protection switching in addition to packet loss protection. VideoIPath also supports forward error correction (FEC), and provides automatic calculation of the FEC settings needed to meet a desired level of service. VideoIPath is administered from a web-based console for comprehensive managed video services. It simplifies the complexity of video-over-IP services by adding a network abstraction layer, allowing users to provision and monitor services without having to consider detailed configuration settings in each network element. By auto-detecting available video resources, VideoIPath can present appropriate video end-points and service profiles to users, enabling them to schedule and initiate connections in an intuitive option-selection process. VideoIPath manages bandwidth by allocating the necessary resources without overbooking.
