The first Space Based Infrared Systems geosynchronous (GEO-1) satellite was off-loaded from a C-5 Galaxy aircraft at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., March 3. The Space Based Infrared Systems Program Directorate, Launch and Range Systems Directorate and the 45th Space Wing, along with industry representatives, Lockheed Martin SBIRS developer and United Launch Alliance, will hold a joint pre-launch media teleconference Tuesday, April 26.
“SBIRS GEO-1 is a testament to strong government-industry partnerships, hard work and dedication of the entire SBIRS team. We remain focused on achieving mission success for this critical program,” says Brig. Gen. (sel) Roger Teague, SMC/IS director. “GEO-1 will play a vital role in our national security space architecture, and we look forward to getting this satellite on-orbit. After GEO-1 is launched, and early orbit tests are complete, SBIRS will deliver unprecedented, global, persistent, infrared surveillance capabilities to our nation for decades to come.”
