L-3 Cincinnati Electronics (L-3 CE) has been awarded a firm fixed price contract by NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in support of NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale Project (MMS). L-3 CE will deliver eight S-band TDRSS Transponders to GSFC for integration into four identical formation flying satellites to study the Earth’s magnetosphere.
L-3 CE’s transmitter/receiver is a digital, firmware based transponder that communicates with NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), providing S-band forward and return link data services as well as navigational ranging information. These units will play key roles in command and control, navigational tracking, and telemetry data return for the MMS formation flying spacecraft. NASA’s study of the magnetosphere will allow scientists to gain knowledge about processes that are believed to play major roles in the formation of “space weather.” The MMS, which is part of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate Heliophysics Division’s Solar Terrestrial Probe Program, is planned for launch in 2014.
