PTC 10 — Ho’omaika’i ‘ana PTC’10!

January 18, 2010

Some notables in the kingdom of satellites really have a difficult task — attend PTC 10, Embracing the Cloud: Connectivity and Innovation, from January 17-20 at the Honolulu Hilton, Hawaii. The translation from the Hawaiian title is “Congratulations PTC’10”, as reports to SatNews indicate that everything is going swimmingly well!

This 32nd PTC annual conference is the Pacific hemisphere’s premier senior-level event. Top executives of telecommunications companies from more than 60 countries, equipment and software developers, content and media services providers, vendors, investors, educators and researchers, policy makers, attorneys, consultants and civil society representatives meet each January in Honolulu to forge alliances, negotiate agreements, network and learn from one another’s experiences and insights in one of the most desirable meeting environments in the world.

SatNews Publisher Silvano Payne has been diligently reporting the information gleaned from the various speakers.

Satellite Infrastructure for Continuous Connectivity

As a complement to terrestrial infrastructure, satellites play an important role in providing continuous connectivity across broad regions. The leaders in providing satellite infrastructure to operators and service providers around the world will discuss their businesses and the future availability of satellites and access to space. The panel will discuss how operators, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, can work with manufacturers and launch providers to leverage the most out of their investment.

View from Above the Cloud: The Satellite Industry Leaders Speak

While the global economic crisis has had a significant impact on most industry sectors, the satellite industry has remained strong. In the Asia Pacific region, the pay TV market, a major source of revenue for the satellite industry, increased by 26 million homes in 2009, reaching more homes than the rest of the world combined. In addition to the proliferation of digital television, satellites provide critical communications links for civilian and military governments, for telecoms and for consumers. At the same time, advances in IP networking, compression create bandwidth efficiencies that continue to result in new applications and markets, including rural broadband, cellular backhauls and disaster recovery. Focusing on the Asian region, satellite industry leaders will discuss the trends, challenges and new opportunities in this roundtable discussion.

  • Moderator, Susan Irwin — President, Irwin Communications
  • Peter Jackson — CEO Asia Satellite
  • Andrew Jordan — President & CEO SAT-GE
  • Yutaka Nagai — Board Dir & Sr EVP, Corp Strategies Planning Group, Sky perfect JSAT
  • Alan Young — CTO, SES World Skies
  • Phillip Spector — EVP, Business Development, & General Counsel, Intelsat

The luncheon today attended by 150-200, was sponsored by Thales Alenia Space and Asia Satellite.

The welcome letter from John Hibbard Chair, Board of Governors and Sharon Nakama CEO, noted that: This year, challenges and opportunities stand in stark contrast. We have all felt the impacts of a very challenging worldwide economic recession. At the same time, tremendous new opportunities are presenting themselves and organizations throughout the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide are well into capitalizing on them.

From major implementations in broadband networks expanding robust connectivity to the opportunities of cloud services on the leading edge of developments, PTC’10 will again be abuzz with significance.

PTC’10 offers an important and substantial platform for understanding where we are and for providing insights to where we may be heading. As is our tradition in providing forward thinking, this year’s theme reflects the opportunities innovation provides across a wide range of interests. We are also conscious of the major challenges not only in developed economies, but also continuing efforts to connect the unconnected and provision of appropriate systems and services in developing economies.

PTC’s large “tent” includes a broad range of telecommunications and ICT interests at the most senior level. The draw of one of the best conferences anywhere will again provide an important arena for extensive business meetings.  All of  this is on one campus at the Hilton Hawaiian Village providing a unique opportunity to mix and meet, learn and share, as well as promote and deal. This year, more than ever, attendance at PTC’10 is essential.
