digiGO! — The Digital (R)Evolution™

August 13, 2009

  • MPEGIF master class page The MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF) is presenting the latest in the MPEGIF Master Class series titled “The Future of Digital Television” at IBC 2009 on Monday, 14th September, 2009 between 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm in the RAI Convention Centre (Room L) in Amsterdam. This year’s MPEGIF Master Class brings together senior executives and experts in digital television with a track record of pioneering new advanced technology and innovative service offerings with new business models. They will share their experiences, both good and bad, and expertise with a focus on technological progress and challenges, regulatory and commercial issues, and opportunities in the overall ecosystem of Digital Television. Highlights will include insights into the following…
    • How digital media standards will evolve to guarantee best-of-breed solutions from 3D television to unicast on demand content delivered over the public internet
    • The success factors for hybrid services bringing broadcast and unicast content together in a common platform
    • How the multi-screen service will evolve as content is re-purposed and transformed for viewing on a wide variety of end user devices
    • How the increase in unicast personalized video leads to a myriad of business opportunities but
    • Aspects of next generation digital broadcast from mobile to online video to HD and above as well as the challenges seen around the world regarding the transition to digital TV
“This year’s Master Class is expected to be more informative than ever with operators with new unicast services now having real experiences to talk about,” said David Price, Vice President of MPEGIF and Vice President at Harmonic Inc. “However as countries move to digital transitions and as viewing habits move to include delivery to the laptop and iPhone there are still many questions around the world surrounding business models and legalities.”

  • Google + On2 logos On2 Technologies, Inc. and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) jointly announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire On2, a leading developer of video compression technology. Under the terms of the agreement, each outstanding share of On2 common stock will be converted into $0.60 worth of Google class A common stock in a stock-for-stock transaction. The transaction is valued at approximately $106.5 million. The number of shares of Google class A common stock to be received by On2 stockholders will be determined by dividing $0.60 per share by the volume weighted average trading price of a share of Google class A common stock based on the sales price of every share of Google class A common stock traded during the twenty trading-day period ending on and including the second trading day prior to the date of the meeting of On2’s stockholders to consider and vote on the merger agreement. The transaction, which is subject to On2 stockholder approval, regulatory clearances and other closing conditions, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2009.

  • Pay TV subscriptions in Asia climbed by nearly 10 percent in the first six months of the year, despite the economic slowdown. According to new data from research house Media Partners Asia, the top 40 operators added 5.8 million net subscribers, lifting the regional total to 65.3 million. The company forecasts that by the end of 2009 the total will have hit 70 million, representing nearly 20 percent growth. Biggest growth areas were India and China, with Hong Kong and Singapore showing slowing market growth. Industry issues on horizon include competitive soccer rights bids in Hong Kong and key Southeast Asian markets in the second half of the year, new satellite platform and new TV channels in Indonesia, and how to secure the investment and revenues to sustain the cable and digital TV growth in India and China.

  • Tieline Technologies logo Tieline Technology delivered a world sports first recently by broadcasting live audio over WiMAX IP during a match between Premier League football side Manchester City and local side the Kaiser Chiefs in Durban, South Africa. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a telecommunications technology that provides broadband IP wireless transmission. These links act as an outdoor 802.11b/g wireless Ethernet bridge that effectively creates a reliable, high speed, long range (2km-100km) private LAN connection between two points or multiple points. The broadcast was initiated by Siemens and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and conducted with partners Broadcast and Installation Engineering and Multisource Telecoms, who are trialing the technology in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa next year.

  • Zero Creative logo Zero Creative has launched the worlds’ first real-time Digital Signage platform entirely based on a 3D engine. This platform is especially designed to maximize implementation on the Company’s autostereoscopic 3D Displays. There are also several extra modules available, such as gesture controlled interaction. 3DZignage is developed using 3D (game) engine technology, making all content native 3D. This was done in order to make a flawless combination with the autostereoscopic xyZ 3D Displays. xyZ 3D Displays are able to show real 3D without any need for special 3D-glasses. The new platform transforms Digital Signage from a passive to a very (inter)active viewer experience and opens up the possibility of two-way communication: allow customers to really interact with the display.
