  • digiBITZ—UPM Raflatac and Alien Technology have been ranked at the top of the latest Vendor Matrices released by ABI Research. The Vendor Matrix is an analytical tool developed by ABI Research to provide a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets. Two new Vendor Matrices have just been released: they assess RFID inlay manufacturers that offer passive 13.56 MHz (HF) and UHF inlays. UPM Raflatac scored highest in the RFID Passive HF Inlay Vendor Matrix, while Alien Technology edged out tough competition to win top honors in the RFID Passive UHF Inlay Vendor Matrix. Vendors are assessed by ABI Research on the important parameters of “innovation” and “implementation” across several criteria, unique to each vendor matrix. More details here….

  • DELIVERY—Editware has a new multi-application server control system, the C3 Clip Control Center. “The C3 Clip Control Center replaces multiple control applications with a single point of control,” stated Jay Coley, president of Editware. “The product facilitates new control requirements as they become necessary, without the need to look for a new solution”. The Clip Control Center is keyboard, mouse, or touch screen driven, and is planned for release during Q3 of 2008. The preliminary applications include the C3 Media Player, which plays out server scenes in as many as eight (8) independent groups using VDCP control— the C3 Media Assembler composes complex sequences from multiple segments through multiple channels and still frame images help the user find IN and OUT points graphically and on-the-fly—C3 Player and C3 Assembler combined can change a program playing out to air in real-time. The product controls: 360 System, Apella, Avid MediaStream, Boxxster, Doremi, EVS, GeeVS, Grass Valley K2, M-Series and Profile, Metropolis, Omneon, Ross SoftMetal, Sao Broadcast, SeaChange, Typhon, Toshiba and other servers with VDCP capability—Grass Valley, California

  • DELIVERY—To start shipping in September is FOR-A Corporation of America’s (NAB: SU5220) new FRC-3000 HD Frame Rate Converter. The company’s flagship FRC-7000 frame rate converter was used in the multi-national transmission of last February’s Super Bowl XLII and the worldwide music event “Live Earth.” With a compact design, the unit fits into a 1RU frame, ideal for news apps. The FRC-3000 uses vector motion compensation processing to analyze and determine the pixel movement in each image frame and uses many of the FRC-7000’s functions. Both models feature advanced scene cut detection that automatically detects scene changes and turns off motion compensation processing so not affect the scenes before and after the frames being converted. A complete, new set of frames is then created in the required output standard. As the frame rate converters automatically recognize similar scene cuts involving the same subject or similar visual content, the resulting conversion contains minimal judder or artifacts. There’s text field automatic detection, which automatically recognizes scrolling text superimposed on video. A manual setting can be selected for static field such as date, time, and program titles and logos. This allows for those portions to be treated separately without performing motion compensation processing. FOR-A’s FRC-3000 and FRC-7000 can perform conversions between 1080/59.94i and 1080/50i, and between 720/59.94p and 720/50p HD frame rates in real-time—Cypress, California

  • DELIVERY—Another Harris Corporation goodie is about to be unveiled—their Videotek QuiC media analysis server. This offering combines loudness monitoring technology from TC Electronic with the QuiC system’s automated quality control and crx tools. The program manager for QuiC, Thomas Lund, stated, “Today’s television viewer is very familiar with audio levels that jump to unacceptable levels, especially during commercial breaks, which causes millions of annoyed viewers to dive for their remotes to turn the sound down and is counter-productive for commercial television. As more channels and platforms are being controlled by fewer master control operators, our loudness monitoring tools built into the QuiC system offer broadcasters a unique, automated solution for this problem.” Harris first introduced QuiC in April 2006 and began shipping it in December of that year to what is now an installed based of more than 100 customers worldwide. In April 2007, Harris expanded the QuiC system’s automated analysis and correction tools designed to analyze, detect, and correct many common file errors. Existing QuiC systems can be upgraded with TC loudness monitoring and control software—Cincinnati, Ohio

  • DELIVERY—A new 2-channel, 5.1-channel surround upmixer is now shipping from the folks at Linear Acoustic. Named UPMAX:neo, this new member of the upMAX 2251 product line, this new unit reduces the footprint to a compact, extremely road-worthy 1RU chassis. Plus, additional upmixing choices have been added to the original upMAX algorithm for more post production application flexibility. Metadata is standard as well as GPI inputs to control upmixing. The company has also debuted their new AEROMAX:one DTV audio processing system, complete with Dolby Digital (AC-3) encoding. This single rack unit accepts four AES pairs of audio to handle two-channel to 5.1 channel network or local audio plus a separate pair of channels for SAP or visual descriptive programming. Multiband, multistage loudness control and upmixing to local audio can be applied with this product. This allows it to batch to 5.1 channel network audio, while leaving the network audio itself untouched.—Lancaster, Pennsylvania
