The Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) has managed yet another critical test success… this time, the craft’s Collision Avoidance Maneuver (CAM) worked as planned. This has now cleared the way for a full demo of this technology. The CAM is a last resort available on the ATV to allow the spacecraft to quickly move away in case of any problems the unit might encounter during its final rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station. The test was initiated from the ATV Control Centre (ATV-CC) in Toulouse, France, with a signal to a completely independent computer aboard the ATV. The functional chain commanded by the computer word. The full CAM demo will start on Friday morning at 08:57 CET—this is an extremely tricky maneuver which will see the spacecraft in survival mode and will involve a complete computer reset.
